NFL Announces Punishment for Giants Safety After Loss to 49ers

Not much has gone right for the New York Giants this season, and that continued in Week 9 when they suffered a 34-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The defeat dropped the Giants‘ record to 2-7, and as if things couldn’t get any worse for them, one of their players was punished for their actions in the team’s loss.

That player was safety Dane Belton, who has taken on a bigger role at the backend of the secondary this year. Belton picked up an unnecessary roughness penalty in the fourth quarter of this game, and while he was assessed a 15-yard penalty in real time, it turns out that wasn’t the only consequence of his actions.

Dane Belton Draws Hefty Fine from NFL

While there have been encouraging developments for the Giants in 2025, they have typically been wiped out pretty quickly. Jaxson Dart appears to be the team’s quarterback of the future, but the offense around him is hampered by injuries. Two of his top playmakers, Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo, have suffered season-ending injuries, making it very tough for the rookie quarterback to move the ball up and down the field.

At times, the defense has shown an ability to keep the team in games, but that was not the case in Week 9. With Mac Jones filling in for the injured Brock Purdy once again, the Niners were able to move the ball at will on offense, leading to their 34-point outburst. While Dart held his own on offense, it ultimately wasn’t enough to prevent the team from suffering another loss.

The team has largely turned its attention to Week 10, but the NFL made sure to loop back around to this game, as there was a big hit from Belton that they wanted to take another look at. Sure enough, the league announced that Belton had been fined $7,201 for his unnecessary roughness penalty, which surely won’t make him too happy.

“Giants safety Dane Belton was fined $7,201 for unnecessary roughness with 6:11 to play in last week’s loss to the 49ers,” Pat Leonard of New York Daily News shared in a post on X.

Giants Hoping to Pick Up a Win in Week 10 vs. Bears

Week 10 Giants news includes reports Brian Daboll was nearly fired.

There are reasons for optimism in New York, but first, the team has to make it through what has simply been a slog of a 2025 campaign. Getting fined for a bit hit is simply rubbing salt in the wounds for Belton, but the league has made it clear they want to keep their players as safe as possible, which is why these fines often end up getting levied.

The Giants will be back in action in Week 10, as they draw a tough matchup against the Chicago Bears. In Week 9, the Bears earned a thrilling 47-42 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, and they will surely be riding high heading into this contest. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and you can bet that Belton and the rest of his teammates will be looking to avoid getting fined by the league in this one.
