Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey has been fined for clearly dipping and leading with his helmet while tackling Olamide Zaccheaus of the Chicago Bears.
The NFL announced the fine Saturday, saying Humphrey was charged $46,371 for unnecessary roughness — use of helmet — in Baltimore’s Week 8 victory over the Bears.
The hit came in the fourth quarter with 7:32 remaining as Bears quarterback Caleb Williams through a ball out to the flat for Zaccheaus. Humphrey quickly swarmed, possibly stripping the ball, but not before driving his helmet into the helmet of Zacchaeus. He was not flagged on the play.

Marlon Humphrey is a Repeat Helmet Offender
Humphrey’s $46,371 fine represents the penalty for a second offense of unnecessary roughness/use of the helmet, according to the NFL’s schedule of fines.
While Humphrey hasn’t been cited for that violation this season, he was fined earlier this season for a facemask violation and was fined twice for a helmet violation last year. He was fined $22,511 following a 35-34 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 7 and $45,060 after a 27-25 playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 19.
Humphrey’s fine ranks as the second-largest this season for an in-game incident, behind only Jalen Carter’s $57,222 penalty for spitting on Dak Prescott in Week 1.
Ravens Defense Looks to Return to Elite Status
The Ravens played their Week 9 game already on “Thursday Night Football” against the Miami Dolphins. Not only was it the return of two-time MVP QB Lamar Jackson from injury, but the Raven defense, which has struggled this season, looked better against the barely kicking Dolphins.
Alohi Gilman set the tone early with a first-quarter forced fumble, providing a key turnover that energized the team during a sluggish first half. The Ravens eventually found their rhythm, piling up 14 third-quarter points, while a forced fumble from Humphrey and Malaki Starks’ first career NFL interception further limited the Dolphins’ scoring chances.
The Ravens’ defense needed a spark, and signs of life finally emerged. They’ve struggled all season in generating takeaways, with a defensive line that has offered little pressure and a secondary that has struggled to slow down aggressive opposing receivers.
Baltimore’s defense starts in the middle of the field, where their safeties can make plays. Gilman has been at the center of that activity, brought in to allow Kyle Hamilton to move closer to the line while the front office continues to look for additional pass-rush support. Humphrey is also a key presence when healthy, particularly after he and the other cornerbacks have shaken off the misfortune that plagued them during last month’s four-game losing streak.
With a lighter schedule ahead in November, the Ravens now have a chance to fully regain their footing and continue building momentum on defense.
The Ravens have better odds to make the playoffs than the division leading Pittsburgh Steelers, according to The Athletic. The rest of the schedule is rather favorable for the Ravens. The next four games are the Minnesota Vikings (3-4), Cleveland Browns (2-6), New York Jets (1-7) and Cincinnati Bengals (3-5).
