NFL Announces Punishment for Two Vikings Players in Week 8

Week 8 for the Minnesota Vikings was a forgetful one as they fell 37-10 to the Los Angeles Chargers. Moreover, two players on the Vikings squad will be a little light in their wallets.

On November 1, the NFL released its Gameday Accountability report, and among the 10 fines issued, two were from the Vikings: Blake Cashman and Dallas Turner. Players are informed when a violation occurs and can appeal the ruling.

Furthermore, appeals are reviewed by officers and former NFL players—Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson—who are jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA. Their decisions are final and cannot be challenged.

Of the two fines, Cashman was the highest. The veteran linebacker was fined due to an unnecessary roughness play in the second quarter at the 14:23 minute mark as he used his helmet. As a result of this incident, the NFL is fining the 29-year-old $23,186.

Meanwhile, Turner was fined for an unnecessary roughness play in the first quarter at the 5:43 minute mark due to the linebacker launching himself. Due to this incident, the league fined the 22-year-old $19,907.

Vikings Will Need to Bounce Back Against Lions

The Vikings’ defense will need to have a bounce-back performance after giving up 37 points to the Chargers in Week 8. Whether Minnesota can rebound in Week 9 against the Lions and keep their NFC playoff hopes alive is still uncertain.

Nonetheless, Minnesota are expected to have its starting quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, back under center. Ahead of the second-year quarterback’s return against the Lions, wideout Justin Jefferson spoke with the media on October 30 to discuss what it’s like having the young signal caller back as QB1.

“Looks good,” Jefferson told reporters“Just going through the plays, going through the motions, dialing up the connection, and, of course, expanding the relationship that we have out there on the field. So it’s been great. I feel like he has the confidence to go out there and do what we expect him to do.

“It’s just all about having that energy and thinking about one play at a time—not thinking about the big play, making the best play of the game, or being perfect throughout the game. It’s just all about taking one play at a time, leaning on everybody in the offense to go to work, and just lead us. And that’s pretty much the main message to him.”

Kevin O’Connell Talks J.J. McCarthy

In addition to Jefferson’s comments on the Michigan product’s comeback, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell shared his thoughts on where McCarthy’s mindset is as he heads into the game against Detroit.

“J.J. is in a good spot,” O’Connell told KFAN’s Paul Allen. “He had some really good work [on October 27] and should get a full week of preparation. He finally feels truly ready to go be himself—not just in his ability to function at the position, but also in the things J.J.

“McCarthy can bring to our offense: his mobility and his ability to protect himself, which comes from playing with great timing and rhythm from the pocket. He also has the ability to create and do some things off the schedule of the play.”
