Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs is dealing with the reality that the team won’t be in the postseason, following their loss on Sunday, December 14, to the Los Angeles Chargers at home at Arrowhead Stadium with a 16-13 final score. If this is Kelce’s final season in the NFL, it goes without saying that he’ll be walking away on a sour note, although it doesn’t take away from all the championships he’s won and records he’s broken as the lead tight end for the Chiefs.
But, following the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the Chargers, Kelce made some postgame decisions that were frowned upon by the NFL as a whole. Now, the NFL has made their decision on what they’re going to do about it.
“Chiefs Kingdom, we’re going give you everything we got. There’s no question about that,” he said on his “New Heights” podcast with his brother, Jason, on Wednesday, December 17, saying that he’s going to play out the season. “If we’re going to go out there and play some football, we’re going to do it the right way and keep trying to get these things fixed and end on the highest note that we can.”
He added, “All I know is to go out there and play my … off and to show up and, you know, give my guys the best chance to win. I think that’s the mentality, man. There’s an integrity thing here.”
NFL Hands Down Decision on Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs
Every Saturday during the season, the NFL gives punishments to players for actions taken during the previous week’s games. The NFL states on their official website that these actions are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity.” Plus, ahead of the season’s start, the NFL and NFL Players Association agree on the set of game-related rules violations that result in these accountability measures.
On Saturday, December 20, the NFL was expected to make a decision on whether they would punish Kelce for not talking to the media after the loss to the Chargers. For several times this season after losses, Kelce has refused to talk to the press, which is against the NFL’s rules.
Well, Kelce got off free again, and the NFL decided not to punish him for skipping the media session. One Chiefs player did get fined, though, and that’s JuJu Smith-Schuster, who got slapped with a $7,903 fine for a “blindside block” and “unnecessary roughness.”
According to the NFL, all of the funds raised from those fines will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “support legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”
Travis Kelce Promises to Play Out the Kansas City Chiefs Season
Even though the Kansas City Chiefs are out of the playoffs, that doesn’t mean the team will slack in their final games.
“If there’s a game to be had, baby, I’m going to go out there, and I’m going to love … playing in it, no matter if it’s a game that’s in the playoffs or gets us in the playoffs or a game that seems like it doesn’t have any implications of that,” Kelce said about the remainder of the season on “New Heights. “And that’s the integrity you’ve got to … go out there with.”
