Though the Las Vegas Raiders‘ season is effectively over, Maxx Crosby was not happy with the team’s decision to shut him down for the final team games. At 2-13, the team is only playing for draft position at this point.
Plus, Crosby’s injured badly enough that he’ll need to get surgery on his knee soon. However, he’s clearly not happy with the decision. Reports have indicated that he disagreed with the Raiders’ plan to sit him out, which has led to speculation that he’ll request a trade this offseason.
Crosby has flirted with the idea of asking for a trade in the past, and now he has a pretty good excuse. According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders would get a hefty return if they were to trade the star defensive end.
“If, Crosby, 28, was wary of the prospects of yet another rebuild, this might be a chance for him to ask for a trade to maximize his prime years,” Bonsignore wrote. “One of the top defensive ends in the game, Crosby would be highly coveted via trade.
“According to an NFL executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity Friday, Crosby would fetch at least two first-round picks. After signing a contract extension this year, the executive said Crosby’s contract is ‘easily tradeable.’”
Would It Be Better for Raiders to Trade Crosby?
The Raiders, especially owner Mark Davis, likely won’t want to trade Crosby. He’s the face of the franchise, does a lot in the Las Vegas community and has been the leader of the team for years.
That said, the Raiders are about to enter a rebuild that could take two or three years to fully realize. Crosby’s going to be 29 at the start of next season, so his timeline likely doesn’t fit with the Raiders’.
Plus, trading him would allow Las Vegas to potentially bring in at least two valuable first-round picks. That’s certainly one way to jumpstart a rebuild if they nail the picks. The Raiders haven’t been winning with Crosby, so an argument could be made that the team might be better off trading him for assets while he’s still young.
Which Teams Could Be Interested in Crosby?
If Crosby requests a trade, there should be many teams interested in trading for him. The Detroit Lions might want to make a splash after missing the playoffs this year. Crosby grew up a Lions fan and spent much of his life in Michigan. He’d likely be happy to join the team.
The Dallas Cowboys could be another team to watch. They were rumored to be interested in him before the trade deadline, and they have an extra first-round pick from the Micah Parsons trade.
The Philadelphia Eagles are always in on big trades, and Raiders general manager John Spytek previously worked for the franchise under general manager Howie Roseman. The Los Angeles Rams are another sneaky team to watch. General manager Les Snead has never been shy about how he doesn’t care about trading draft picks to land star players. Crosby makes any of these teams better overnight.
