The Miami Dolphins travel to Atlanta on Sunday to face a 3-3 Falcons team that still has plenty to play for. Yes, at 1-6 and in a dizzying death spiral, the Dolphins really don’t have a reason to suit up other than to get paid and maybe put some good things on tape.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that as dysfunctional as the Dolphins have been all year and even with the constant rumors about head coach Mike McDaniel’s job, the locker room is still intact.
âIâm told that embattled Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has not lost the vast majority of Miamiâs locker room despite a 1-6 start. However, as we have seen play out in press conferences, his relationship with QB Tua Tagovailoa needs work if the Dolphins hope to right the ship Sunday in Atlanta â and beyond,” Russini writes.
She also explained that sentiment around the NFL seems to be that the team has been poorly constructed and it’s time to break out the dynamite.
“As one NFL GM explained, âMiami needs a fresh start. They never really developed and drafted well enough. They put Band-Aids on the roster and no progress. Mikeâs not a bad coach. Itâs just an aimless programâ¦not a program that can be sustained,â she continued.
NFL insider says the Miami Dolphins aren’t looking to change any time soon
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says Dolphins’ ownership is aware that they need to make an overhaul, but don’t expect that to come soon.
â(The Miami Dolphins) are going to roll forward with what they have, hoping the results are different,â Rapoport said. âI think one thing that the past weekâs events has showed us is that change is coming to the Dolphins. Obviously (Mike) McDaniel is someone that Stephen Ross really likes and respects, he supported him, he chose him, he has invested in him with a big-time contract extension â does not want to fire him. The results though, have to change.â
Dolphins fans, meanwhile, can’t get a regime change soon enough.
âAnd I think because of the ugly losses, because of Tua Tagovailoa throwing teammates under the bus and then recanting and walking all of that back â because of that, it has forced the entire nation to look at the Miami Dolphins and say âwhat are they gonna do?â,â Rapoport continues. âSo the Dolphins are going to get back to work this week with the hopes that the results are different, but I can pretty confidently say change is coming to the organization. Itâs just a matter of how and when.â
Do the Dolphins really think that there will be different results? Aren’t they quietly hoping that the team continues to go into a ditch this year so they can get a better draft pick?
Miami Dolphins’ superstar mulling the end of his career
Meanwhile, through all of this, the Dolphins are probably facing life without Tyreek Hill from here on out. Sure, he won’t play the rest of the year, but he’s contemplating retirement now too.
âAt the end of the day, I feel like that decision is based upon how I feel and where my mindset is at the moment,â Hill said Thursday night. âIâm happy with the career that Iâve had. I love playing football. I love it, but it takes a lot. It takes a lot on you mentally, it takes a lot on you physically.
âIâm at the point now where I need to have a conversation with mom, family, everybody. Wherever my mind is at the time, the decision will be made, but I know right now, I havenât had time to live in the moment.â
