While there are several NFL head coaches on the hot seat right now, only one has been given his marching orders. The Tennessee Titans just fired Brian Callan, which leaves the rest of us thinking about Miami Dolphins‘ coach Mike McDaniel, Cincinnati Bengals‘ Zac Taylor and some even wonder about John Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens.
But, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McDaniel probably won’t be the next guy to be fired.
“I don’t see a coaching move being done anytime soon,” Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show. “I don’t see a head coach losing his job … Mike McDaniel has come under intense criticism, I don’t see that happening soon.”
The Dolphins lost another game in awful fashion on Sunday when they blew it in the final minute to the Los Angeles Chargers. But, according to Schefter, McDaniel won’t be paying the ultimate price right now.
Former Dolphins thinks Mike McDaniel is the problem
Reggie Bush played for the Dolphins for two years in 2011 and 2012. He’s one of many that think McDaniel is a major issue with this football team, even though plenty have their fingerprints on the mess.
“Mike McDaniel has been running the same exact offense since he’s been there,” Bush said in an interview with DJ Siddiqi of RG. “He stands in front of the podium with this exact same look — like he’s depleted. He just doesn’t know.
“People have to start understanding he just doesn’t know. It’s OK if you don’t know. But if you’re doing the same things over and over and over and you’re expecting different results, come on, you can’t be serious.”
Mike McDaniel doesn’t seem to have many answers
It’s tough to blame McDaniel for not having any answers at this point in the season. The team is 1-5, they are without their biggest offensive weapon for the season, they find creative ways to lose each week, the quarterback is calling out teammates and they’ve had – what sounds like – multiple players-only meetings before the halfway point.
That’s a lot of bad to add up.
“Part of winning football games is executing your best technique and fundamentals at the end of the game,” McDaniel said following the Chargers game. “There’s not one player or play that dictates the game. It’s an accumulation of that, but when you’re in a position to win a football game and you have a quarterback in your grasp, I think the play previous and that Ladd (McConkey), we have a potential sack. A potential sack in that situation is monumental because then they have to burn a timeout because then they’re behind the sticks and now they have no timeouts, which can affect however you get points.”
I’m not sure what he’s supposed to say right now. The only honest answer he can give is: ‘You all saw the game. What do you want me to tell you?’
But, obviously, that’s not an acceptable answer (true as it might be) so we’ll have to settle for him trying to explain how Ladd McConkey got off to the races with under a minute to play in the fourth quarter.
“We were unable to come up with that sack. I think there was a couple people that had opps. He got the ball out, and then it comes back to more fundamentals and technique where you’re bringing your feet in space. We had an overrun tackle, so very controllable and it’s a tough one to experience because it’s at the root of the techniques and fundamentals we been talking endlessly about, how to bring ball carriers down. That was a big play in the game. It didn’t decide the game; however, it could have been the decider for us if we make plays that I think we have the ability to across the board.”
It sounds like McDaniel is safe for now, but of course that could change at a moment’s notice.
