NFL Insider Makes Bold Claim About Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes

The Buffalo Bills have a lot of excitement in their camp right now, because they’re heading into a new season with the wind on their back. The team is gearing up for a big 2025-26 run, and not only do they have some great players on their squad but they also have the league’s current MVP-winning quarterback in Josh Allen.

Even though Allen hasn’t brought home a Lombardi Trophy for Buffalo, there’s an argument to be made that he’s a better quarterback than Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes. But, most of the best-of tallies of current quarterbacks have Mahomes above Allen, because, yes, he has won a handful of those big games.

But, are those tallies right? Many in the Buffalo Bills camp would argue that Allen is actually the better quarterback, and they’re not alone. As the 2025-26 season approaches, Allen is getting some respect from at least one NFL insider who is calling bluff on these best-of rankings that have Allen too low.

Bills QB Josh Allen vs. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

While Bills fans might be a bit biased when they’re saying that Allen beats out Mahomes, not everyone is just saying that because the Bills are their favorite team. Former NFL quarterback and current NFL analyst Kurt Benkert put out his rankings of the top three quarterbacks in the league on Wednesday, July 9, and he tells a different story.

Benkert has Allen at No. 2, only behind, get this, Lamar Jackson. He has Mahomes at No. 3. As someone who picked Jackson as my quarterback in fantasy last year, I’m okay with Jackson being No. 1, even though some would argue that point. Regardless, he has Allen beating Mahomes, which should make some Buffalo enthusiasts happy.

“That’s how I’d rank these three,” he stated. “If you don’t think Lamar or Josh would have had at least one Super Bowl with Big Red by now idk what to tell you.”

In a Friday, July 11, feature for BLD, Ryan Heckman agrees with having Allen over Mahomes. “But, the last time Mahomes won an MVP was three seasons ago,” he notes in the piece. “Not to take anything away from the two-time winner, in Mahomes, but if we are talking right now, then Benkert has the right idea. Allen is simply the better and more valuable player, and the voters agreed.”

Patrick Mahomes Without Travis Kelce

Heckman also states that “to further back Benkert’s point, if Allen was in Kansas City and having played with Travis Kelce, under Andy Reid’s offensive prowess, there is no doubt he’d be a Super Bowl champion at this point.”

It makes sense that Mahomes has had more support than Allen over the years, and that’s a good reason to rank Allen over Mahomes going into the 2025-26 season. Plus, Mahomes had a rougher season last year, albeit still great, finishing with under 4,000 passing yards for the first time since he took over the starting quarterback role.

Either way, one thing is for sure: This upcoming season is going to be a crucial one for both Allen and Mahomes and will tell a lot about the state of both players.
