The Green Bay Packers got some baffling news earlier this week when veteran special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia abruptly announced he is leaving the team and stepping down from his role on Green Bay’s coaching staff. The former interim head coach of the Raiders is one of the league’s most respected assistants, and his departure leaves a vacuum at an important coordinator position at an odd time in the football calendar.
Not only that, but Packers assistant special teams coordinator Byron Storer left to become the Browns special teams coordinator earlier in the offseason. Losing your top two special teams assistants over a month into the offseason is far from ideal timing, yet that’s where Green Bay finds themselves now.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s NFL insider, Adam Schefter, joined the ESPN Milwaukee radio show to break down the bizarre circumstances surrounding Bisaccia’s departure from the Packers.
“Well that’s the part that I found unusual, that the assistant [special teams coordinator] left as well, earlier in the offseason,” Schefter said. “I don’t have the answers — I actually had to make calls on [the Packers’] special teams last night. But like, if they knew [Bisaccia] was leaving, why’d they let their assistant coach go? And if they let their assistant coach go, why did they not make sure [Bisaccia] was staying?”
“There are some unanswered questions that I can’t answer for you this morning that you just wonder about,” Schefter continued. “But I will say this: that we’re sitting here on February 18th. It’s not like you can’t go find a coach on February 18th, you know? If your coach quits on May 18th you go find somebody. It’s not ideal, but you go do it. These staffs have found their ways, but it can get done, and it will get done, and they’ll find a special teams coach and go make it happen.”
The Green Bay Packers’ Special Teams Units Have Struggled in Recent Years
It’s no secret that the Packers have been held back by poor special teams play in critical moments of recent seasons. Hiring Bisaccia was supposed to fix that, but Green Bay ranked 19th in special teams grade in 2025, per PFF.
Still, Schefter and the ESPN Milwaukee crew couldn’t help but circle back to the sheer oddness of the timing of the Packers’ move.
“That’s the part that strikes me Jen, you know,” Schefter said. “[If Bisaccia] was going to step down, why did it take this long? Like, that’s my question. If I were to make — why now? [Vikings GM] Kwesi Adofo-Mensah gets fired a month [after the season]. Why a month later? I heard [Adofo-Mensah could get fired], okay, but why did we wait that long? What’s the deal? Anyway that’s the situation.”
