NFL Teams Share Stunning Comments About Jets TE Mason Taylor: Exclusive

The New York Jets received tons of praise for their selection of rookie tight end Mason Taylor with the No. 42 overall pick in the second round of April’s draft.

ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler joined me on “Boy Green Daily” to take that praise to another level.

“Mason Taylor sticks out to me because I go back to my post-draft notes and just talking to other teams about like the best moves of the offseason, and Mason Taylor came up a few times. That was great great value in the second round. I think he is going to come in right away as a young but experienced player who can kind of do it all. He can be maybe their best tight end presence they have had in a while. The Jets have had some capable tight ends, but they have never had someone with that star potential to put them over the top. I do think he can be that, based on sort of the early returns I have gotten from him and how happy they have been with him,” Fowler explained to me on my podcast.

Taylor Has Been Making Splash Plays in Training Camp

On Friday, July 25, Taylor scored his first touchdown of training camp.

“It’s a beaut, Clark, it’s a beaut,” as Clark Griswold Sr once said.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reacted to that performance in practice, calling it an “Impressive day for rookie tight end Mason Taylor, who made a diving catch in the back of the end zone in a 7-on-7 period. Taylor, drafted in the second round, will have a big role. Glenn pointed to the rookie’s blocking, saying he’s better than advertised in that area.”

Cimini added on social media, “TE Mason Taylor looks like he belongs.”

Taylor a Fantasy Football Darling in 2025?

The Jets’ offenses haven’t been good for the majority of the 21st century. However, there is optimism that could change in 2025. If that does, several Jets could return to fantasy football glory this season.

“Mason Taylor was one of my favorite TEs through this year’s draft process. Very fluid and natural athlete who could easily be second on the Jets in targets. Let’s not forget Justin Fields leading Cole Kmet to a TE1 season just a couple of years ago,” Fantasy Football analyst Dave Kluge said on social media.

Taylor told Jets team reporter Caroline Hendershot earlier this offseason that his impressions of the Tanner Engstrand offense are, “the tight ends are definitely going to be used.”

The Jets Have a Clear Vision for Rookie WR

While the Jets may have received a ton of initial praise for the Taylor selection, not every rookie received that treatment.

When the green and white selected Arian Smith out of Georgia with the No. 110 overall pick in the fourth round, it was met by laughter on social media.

Smith was the only Power-4 player with double drops last season, Dane Brugler of The Athletic wrote in “The Beast.”

“They feel like he can get past his drops [and] they feel like he can be more than a you know catch-and-run guy or a screens guy, they do see more for him as far as a complete receiver,” Fowler told me on “Boy Green Daily.”

Jets Continue to Pour Resources Into the O-Line

With the No. 7 overall pick in the first round, the Jets selected Armand Membou out of Missouri.

“The tackle they are getting, Membou, I remember hearing his name a lot the days before the draft. Just talking to some executives of how they saw some shades of Jason Peters with him. Just as far as the length and the physicality,” Fowler revealed.

Peters played 21 seasons in the NFL. During that period, he earned six All-Pro nominations and nine Pro Bowl berths. If Membou can be half the player Peters was, the Jets will be very happy with that selection.

“The rookie class is pretty good,” Fowler told me. “I really do like their draft. Just more so from talking to other teams about those players, the Jets got high marks on their draft. Those three guys could and will contribute right away.”
