The good news continues to pour in for New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
This week, he received a record-breaking $130 million contract extension that made him one of the top-five highest-paid pass catchers in the NFL. Now he has officially joined the elite of the elite for the very first time.
ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler revealed his top 10 wide receiver rankings ahead of training camp in 2025 on Wednesday, July 16. The voting system is based on conversations Fowler has had with scouts, league execs, and coaches.
Wilson just made the cut as the No. 10-ranked receiver in the league.
“Wilson makes his top-10 debut after three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, beating Terry McLaurin, Puka Nacua, and Brian Thomas Jr. for the final spot in this ranking. On talent, he’s unquestionably a top-10 player. The way he slithers in and out of routes with elite flexibility is Justin Jefferson lite,” Fowler said.
“He’s one of the best separators in the league,” an anonymous AFC executive told Fowler for ESPN.
However, not everyone is a Wilson fan.
The former Ohio State product was ranked as high as the No. 6 best wide receiver in football, but he was also unranked by at least one member of the panel.
An anonymous AFC exec described Wilson to Fowler as a “freelancer” in terms of his route running.
An anonymous NFL receivers coach was more blunt in his criticism, calling it a “lack of detail in his routes.”
“All over the map — does his own thing on the field,” an anonymous AFC scout told Fowler about Wilson. “Vast potential, [but he’s] not close to what he could be.”
Simple Explanations Are Often the Simple Answers to Simple Questions
Wilson has been the most productive receiver in Jets franchise history across his first three seasons. However, compared to the elite wide receivers in the NFL, the former Ohio State product hasn’t put up the same kind of production.
“Some scouts wonder what’s holding him back,” from a production standpoint, Fowler revealed.
Well, he has played with eight different quarterbacks in three years. Justin Fields will become the ninth QB on that list in 2025.
Garrett Wilson has gotten the job done regardless of who has thrown him the ball during his #Jets career:
275 receptions
3,198 receiving yards
14 touchdownsHere are the 8 different quarterbacks that he has played with through his first 3 #NFL seasons:

When the Jets get more consistent and better overall quarterback play, Wilson’s numbers should skyrocket.
Sometimes, simple explanations are the right answers.
“He has produced in suboptimal circumstances,” an anonymous NFL general manager told Fowler. “He would only grow in stature in another system more friendly to his skill set.”
Wilson isn’t going anywhere. The record-breaking deal he just signed will keep him in a Jets uniform for the next six seasons. Head coach Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand have stated that Wilson getting the ball is the offense’s top priority.
Reuniting with his college quarterback should only help that process.
