NBA Sharpshooter Malik Beasley is no longer a target of a federal gambling investigation, but his free-agency chances may be limited.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Beasley is no longer a target of the investigation on August 22. “Beasley’s attorneys told ESPN that they had extensive conversations and meetings with the Eastern District of New York and were informed Beasley is not being considered the target after allegations regarding gambling on NBA games and prop bets during the 2023-24 season,” Charania tweeted.
Although the 28-year-old guard is no longer on the federal radar, ESPN’s Bobby Marks provided a free agency update. “The free agent market has significantly dried up since late June,” Marks tweeted on August 22.
Beasley’s Free-Agency
On June 29, ESPN reported that Beasley was under investigation by federal authorities for gambling-related matters. Needless to say, no charges were brought against him, but he was evicted from his apartment on August 8.
Last season, Beasley averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 33.9% from three. He played a huge role in the franchise capturing its first playoff berth since the 2018-19 season.
Before the unrestricted free agent was under investigation, there were reports, according to ESPN’s Charania, that a contract was on the table.
“Sources said that Beasley and the Detroit Pistons were set to complete a three-year $42 million contract to bring the 28-year-old guard back, but the proposal evaporated after the franchise became aware of the federal investigation, and sources said other interested teams paused conversations with Beasley as well,” wrote Charania.
NBA Next Steps?
Unfortunately, the writing may be on the wall as the Pistons added several key players during free agency. ESPN’s Marks explained how the franchise’s additions impact Beasley.
“While Detroit still retains his non-bid rights, the maximum they can sign him for his $7.2M,” Marks Tweeted. “The Pistons have signed Caris LeVert, Duncan Robinson, Javonte Green to replace Beasley and Tim Hardaway Jr.”
“They also expect Jaden Ivey to return.” Even though the Pistons could potentially move on, there is a possibility that Beasley can find a good situation. Charania mentioned that there are teams that may be interested in Beasley.
“Several teams have maintained contact with Beasley’s representation during the past few weeks about his status, sources said,” Charania wrote.
“Teams that have an exception to sign Beasley to a contract greater than $7.2 million include the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Wizards.”
Beasley’s NBA Trajectory
Ultimately, the interest in Beasley may increase now that he is no longer a target of a federal investigation. However, his negotiation power may take a hit, which can result in a shorter contract.
Nonetheless, last season provided a glimpse into the veteran guard’s abilities and potential. He finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting, and he played all 82 games.
During the postseason, the Florida State product averaged a career high 14 points, and he shot 100% from the charity stripe. He played 27.2 minutes during the playoffs and provided a big spark for the franchise.
