The NY Rangers head into this upcoming season looking to add all the firepower they can. In particular, the club will be looking to replace the departed Chris Kreider with another reliable scoring winger.
Without any clear internal options, the NY Rangers could turn to the trade market to solve that need. Enter Martin Necas. Necas has been rumored to be on the block the entire offseason. Rumors picked up after reports suggested that he was unhappy with his time with the Colorado Avalanche.
Necas will be entering the final year of his current contract. He signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes, but was dealt to the Avalanche for Mikko Rantanen last season. As it stands, the Avalanche are not certain to re-sign Necas. So, a trade could be on the table at some point this season.
That’s where the NY Rangers could step in to make a blockbuster move. Here’s a look at how that deal could shape up:
NY Rangers get:
Martin Necas, F
Colorado Avalanche get:
2026 first-round pick
2026 sixth-round pick
Brett Berard, F
The price the NY Rangers would have to pay would not likely include current roster players. Unless the Avalanche have their eye on a roster player like Taylor Raddysh or Adam Edstrom, the Avalanche likely take futures.
The biggest return for the Avalanche is cap space. Plus, the futures, such as a prospect like Brett Berard, could be flipped in another deal. Plus, landing a first-round draft pick is something the Avalanche would accept, either for themselves or to package in another trade.
Why Necas Makes Sense for NY Rangers
Necas is coming off an 83-point season split between the Avalanche and Hurricanes. At 26, Necas is still young enough to where his ceiling is above him. He can play a top-six role easily. That’s why he could slide into the NY Rangers’ second unit and contribute immediately.
If needed, Necas could slide into the top line, giving NY Rangers’ head coach Mike Sullivan more weapons to deploy in various situations.
Unless Necas struggles this upcoming season, he could reach the 80-point plateau again. If everything goes well, 100 points wouldn’t be out of the question.
Necas Could Still Test Free Agency in 2026
Martin Necas is slated to become a free agent next summer. That situation could pose a significant problem for the NY Rangers. The club would need to ink Necas to an extension. Otherwise, the 26-year-old Czech native could become an expensive rental.
Of course, one way around that would be to condition a contract extension a part of the trade with the Avalanche. While doable, it’s unclear whether Necas would agree to it. The prevailing chatter has been that Necas is eager to test free agency.
So, even if the NY Rangers had a solid deal in place, Necas could still opt to hit the market. Such a risk may be one the Blue Shirts might not want to face.
But there is something to keep in mind. If the NY Rangers find themselves poised to make a deep playoff run, the team could pull the trigger anyway and figure out an extension down the road.
