Oilers Add Canucks Gritty Forward In New Trade Pitch

The Edmonton Oilers have officially gotten the trading season started in the NHL. The Oilers made two moves on Dec. 12 and have strengthened their roster in the process.

The Oilers’ big move of the day was acquiring goalie Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for goalie Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round pick. The Oilers also landed former first-round pick Sam Poulin from Pittsburgh in the trade.

However, this was not the only move that the Oilers made. The Oilers also acquired defenseman Spencer Stastney from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick. With this, the Oilers have found a younger replacement for Kulak.

While the Oilers made some major changes to their roster, they should not be done yet. When looking at their forward group, it is clear that they still could use another impactful winger. One trade candidate who stands out as a very intriguing option for the Oilers to consider is Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood.

Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a new trade proposal that would have the Oilers acquire Sherwood from the Canucks in another big swap.

Oilers Get:

  • Kiefer Sherwood

Canucks Get:

  • 2027 First-Round Pick
  • 2026 Seventh-Round Pick
  • Mattias Janmark

Canucks’ Kiefer Sherwood Is Prime Trade Candidate Right Now

It has been a bad season for the Canucks. At the time of this writing, they have an 11-17-3 record and are at the very bottom of the NHL standings. While they entered this season with the hope of being a playoff team, the chances of that occurring are continuing to decrease as they keep struggling.

Due to this, the Canucks have already made it clear to teams that they are open for business. Back in November, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Canucks have made their veteran players available for trade.

“According to several sources, the Vancouver Canucks have let it be known that — in an effort to get younger — they are willing to listen to offers on “veteran players,” Friedman reported.

Besides superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes, Sherwood is the biggest trade candidate on the Canucks right now. Sherwood’s bargain $1.5 million cap hit, hard-nosed style of play, and secondary scoring ability is already making him a popular target, and the Oilers would be wise to join the sweepstakes.

Sherwood Would Improve Oilers’ Top Nine In a Big Way

If the Oilers acquired Sherwood, he would immediately improve their depth on the wing. When looking at their current lineup, Sherwood could slot nicely on their second line with Leon Draisaitl and Matt Savoie. However, due to his ability to play both sides, Sherwood could fit in multiple spots in the Oilers’ top nine.

Sherwood’s solid two-way play would also make him a candidate to receive time on both the Oilers’ power play and penalty kill. With this, he could be a very solid player for Edmonton to bring in.

In 31 games so far this season with the Canucks, Sherwood has recorded 13 goals, 17 points, and 136 hits. This is after he set career highs with 19 goals, 21 assists, 40 points, and 462 hits in 78 games for Vancouver this past season.
