The Edmonton Oilers have had mixed results early on this season. At the time of this writing, the Oilers have a 13-11-6 record and are fourth in the Pacific Division standings. When noting that they made the Stanley Cup Final in back-to-back years, this kind of start is a bit underwhelming for their standards.
With the Oilers having Stanley Cup aspirations, it would not be surprising in the slightest if they aggressively look to upgrade their roster. There is no question that the Oilers should be aiming to improve between the pipes, as goalies Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have struggled this season. Yet, at the same time, they would also benefit by adding another top-six winger to their group.
When looking at trade candidates around the NHL, Buffalo Sabres star Alex Tuch stands out as a perfect potential fit for the Oilers. The 29-year-old winger would give their forward a major boost if acquired, as he is an impact top-six forward with size.
Due to this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that would have the Oilers acquire Tuch from the Sabres in a major swap.
Oilers Get:
- Alex Tuch (50% retained)
Sabres Get:
- 2027 First-Round Pick
- 2028 Fourth-Round Pick
- Josh Samanski
- Mattias Janmark
Sabres’ Alex Tuch Is Among NHL’s Top Trade Candidates
The Sabres are once again among the NHL’s worst teams in 2025-26 so far. They currently have a 12-14-4 record and 28 points, which puts them at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. The only teams in the NHL that have fewer points in the NHL than the Sabres right now are the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators.
With this and Tuch being a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA), the big winger is currently viewed as one of the top trade candidates in the league. It is precisely why he was given the No. 3 spot on NHL insider Chris Johnston’s most recent trade board for The Athletic.
“He’s the kind of player it makes sense to keep around long-term, but he’s also too valuable to potentially lose for nothing, especially if the Sabres aren’t firmly in the playoff race come the trade deadline,” Johnston wrote about Tuch.
With this, it is certainly possible that the Sabres could end up moving Tuch this season if he still does not have a contract extension near the deadline. If the Sabres do make him available, the Oilers would be wise to make a major push for him.
Oilers’ Top Six Would Be Unstoppable With Tuch
Tuch has shown throughout his career that he is capable of being an impactful offensive contributor. This has certainly been the case this season, as he has posted 11 goals and 26 points in 30 games. This comes after scoring at least 36 goals in two out of his three previous seasons with the Sabres. He also had a career-high 79 points in 74 games for Buffalo during the 2022-23 season.
With numbers like these, Tuch would undoubtedly make Edmonton’s top six and power play stronger if acquired. When looking at Edmonton’s current roster, he could be a perfect fit on their second line with Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin.
