It’s the time of year when coaching rumors and predictions begin to swirl across both college football and the NFL. The good news for the Green Bay Packers is that they appear secure with Matt LaFleur. The bad news is that their 9-3-1 season — and their spot atop the NFC North — has their assistants drawing attention.
Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is already being viewed as a top name for several openings once the season ends. Hafley, a former Boston College head coach, spent four seasons there before arriving in Green Bay in 2024, where he has significantly improved the Packers defense.
But what about offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich? While LaFleur still calls the plays — and made clear in November he has no plans to give that up, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky — Stenavich’s name has surfaced because of his strong connection to a major college job that just opened.
Packers’ Adam Stenavich Could Become Michigan Coaching Candidate
Michigan shocked the sports world on December 10 by firing head coach Sherrone Moore. Schools rarely dismiss coaches this late in December, but the university cited scandalous and unusual circumstances in making the move with cause.
The Wolverines now face the challenge of hiring what will be their third head coach in four years. Moore’s firing follows Jim Harbaugh’s departure, which came under its own set of controversies.
Given how things ended for both Harbaugh and Moore, Michigan will probably clean house. But if the school chooses to reconnect with someone who “bleeds maize and blue,” Adam Stenavich could emerge as a realistic option, according to Football Scoop’s John Brice.
“The former Wolverines offensive lineman, who played under the legendary Lloyd Carr, has surged in profile due to his NFL work as the Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator in recent years,” Brice wrote. “He’s gotten widespread praise for his work in the ongoing development of quarterback Jordan Love, and sources told FootballScoop Wednesday afternoon that Stenavich has steadily maintained being prepared for an opportunity to coach at his alma mater.”
Brice also reported that Stenavich already has a group of coaches from both the NFL and college ranks who would join him at Michigan if he were hired.
Losing Adam Stenavich Would Be Big Loss For Packers
Stenavich began his coaching career at Michigan in 2011 as a strength and conditioning intern before serving as a graduate assistant from 2012-13. After offensive line stops at Northern Arizona and San Jose State, he entered the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. In 2019, he joined Green Bay under LaFleur as offensive line coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2022.
With years spent under both Kyle Shanahan and LaFleur, Stenavich has been described as “the highest-paid non-play-calling OC” in the league, according to Brice.
“In other words, the Packers value him immensely,” Brice added.
Given that Stenavich has been with LaFleur since 2019, his departure would create a significant void on the Packers staff if he were to become Michigan’s next head coach. But he has to be taken as serious candidate given his connection, not to mention Michigan’s desperation.
