The Green Bay Packers were busy this offseason looking to build up their roster after they flamed out of the playoffs in the wild card round last year. Part of that involved selecting a pair of wide receivers in the 2025 NFL Draft, Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, as the team is looking to further insulate quarterback Jordan Love and the offense.
Early in training camp, though, the position has been battered by injuries, putting the coaching staff in a bind when it comes to keeping bodies on the field. As a result, the front office decided to reunite with one of their former players earlier this week in an effort to add some more depth at the spot ahead of the new season.
Packers Reunite with Wide Receiver Kawaan Baker
The Packers had a pretty deep wide receiver room last year, and it’s only deeper heading into the new season. Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Christian Watson are the top trio, with Golden and Williams also factoring into the mix. Behind these guys are veterans like Dontayvion Wicks, Mecole Hardman, and Malik Heath, who also have experience making plays in the NFL.
The problem is that injuries have battered this position to start training camp. Watson is still recovering from a torn ACL, and Reed, Doubs, and Wicks have all picked up various bumps and bruises that have forced them to miss some time during training camp. As a result, the offense is running out of bodies to throw in at wide receiver.
That has led them to reunite with Kawaan Baker, a seventh-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft who has spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, and Las Vegas Raiders to begin his career. After he got waived by Las Vegas, Green Bay decided to claim him and bring him back to town for a second stint in order to shore up their depth at this spot.
“The Green Bay Packers claimed WR Kawaan Baker off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. The transaction was announced Wednesday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst,” the Packers announced on Wednesday.
Can Kawaan Baker Carve Out Role with Packers?

Despite spending time with all these teams, Baker has only suited up in two games throughout his career back in 2021 with the Saints, racking up only one tackle on special teams. He has familiarity with the Packers offense, though, so at the very least, he can come in, get some reps, and hold down the fort while the rest of the wide receiver room gets healthy.
Coming in late to training camp is always going to be tough, and it goes without saying that Baker faces long odds of sticking around with Green Bay. If he strings together some strong performances, or the team’s injured wide receivers don’t heal as quickly as expected, he could stick around on the practice squad. Baker will be worth keeping an eye on, but it remains to be seen how long he will be in town for.
