The Green Bay Packers‘ roster is fairly strong across the board, minus perhaps a small lapse at corner after the release of former All-Pro Jaire Alexander.
But one of the areas of strengths has now become the depth at wide receiver, after the franchise spent their first and third round picks on acquiring new talent at the position in the form of Matthew Golden and Savion Williams.
So deep in fact, that according to Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport, it is the biggest question for the Packers heading into preseason. Specifically, who will will rise to the top of the pack and cement their spot on the roster.
The Packers Will Learn Much About Their Receiving Corps Over The Next Month
“It has been over two decades since the Green Bay Packers spent a Round 1 pick on a wide receiver,” Davenport wrote on Tuesday, “but they finally broke that streak in 2025 by taking Matthew Golden 23rd overall.
The Texas product joins a wide receiver corps loaded with talent, potential and questions. Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks and he injured Christian Watson have all shown game-breaking ability. But none has shown he can consistently be a go-to pass-catcher.”
“…Given Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love‘s injury history, he’s unlikely to play much in the preseason. But every practice rep and game target these young receivers get matters.
Because the Week 1 lineup could look much different than the training camp depth chart.”
What Will Green Bay’s Depth Chart Look Like At Receiver By Week 1?
Well – per Davenport and the article, much will be revealed over the course of the three preseason games and general practices during training camp.
Right now Golden, Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs – if he does not get traded, Dontayvion Wicks and Savion Williams seem set to retain spots on the final 53-man roster. That leaves one to two spots left for other players – and that is assuming that Christian Watson starts the season on IR/PUP.
The most likely contenders for that final spot are former Chief, Mecole Hardman, or longtime Packer, Malik Heath. But perhaps the battle in the roster is less about who makes the final roster that who will actually line up on game day.
Reed and Doubs will likely be exempt from preseason duty, perhaps with an exception for the very final bout ahead of week one. But Golden, Williams and likely Wicks should all see some action in the coming weeks.
At this point, Golden is the front-runner to join Reed and Doubs as the team’s starters, but some strong performances from the dynamic Williams – or some steady handedness from Wicks, could see either of them jump the line and become one of the Packers’ main men at what will be a loaded position group.
