Packers’ Matt LaFleur Sends Clear Message on Jordan Love & Malik Willis

The Green Bay Packers are coming off a third consecutive loss, with the team unable to keep up with Derrick Henry and the Baltimore Ravens during Saturday’s game at Lambeau Field.

As a result of the loss, the Chicago Bears have won the NFC North division title, making their path in the NFL playoffs a little easier. However, the Packers have also clinched a playoff spot, regardless of how the rest of the season pans out for the storied franchise.

The biggest concern moving forward is the playing status of quarterbacks Jordan Love and Malik Willis, who are both dealing with injuries. Willis made things interesting in Week 17, as he had an incredible performance against the Ravens, which turned many heads and raised some uncomfortable questions for head coach Matt LaFleur on Sunday.

During Sunday’s press conference, LaFleur had to address whether there’s a quarterback controversy in Green Bay after Willis’ performance against Baltimore.

The Packers head coach couldn’t shut down the speculation fast enough, saying the following during his media availability about Love’s status as the franchise quarterback moving forward.

“I want to pump the brakes on all that stuff,” LaFleur said. “I think Jordan Love is playing some pretty high-level football, and it’s great that we feel the same about Malik in his ability to go in there. I thought he’s had two really back-to-back outstanding performances. So we’re in a good spot with that position, certainly have a lot of confidence in both of those guys, but it’s clear that Jordan is our franchise quarterback, and when he is healthy, he’s going to be our starter. So, just want to squash all that.”

Despite Willis proving to be a formidable quarterback for the Packers, LaFleur clearly has no intention of benching Love heading into the final game of the regular season.

Willis did his best Lamar Jackson impression during Saturday’s loss to the Ravens, as he was making plays with his arm and his legs, while completing 18 of his 21 passes and scoring three total touchdowns.

With Willis putting on a show in front of the Packers faithful in Green Bay, there’s a good chance he has improved his chances of landing a starting job in the NFL through free agency during the offseason, which he was asked about.

“I think that what you put on tape is your pitch to other teams,” Willis said during his media availability. “Obviously, any opportunity, it will be a blessing, and you want to think about that type of stuff, but can’t worry about tomorrow. Today has enough problems of its own. We’ve got to figure out how to get back on track here.”

In the meantime, he’ll continue to back up Love and provide an insurance policy under center for the Packers, who are hoping to make a deep run in the playoffs.
