Knowing their division rival is coming to town on September 7, the Green Bay Packers want everyone as healthy as possible. Two key defensive players were ruled out for the rest of training camp as Green Bay’s $220 million QB joined them.
The Packers QB still showed up to practice, just one day after undergoing thumb surgery. Surgery was the suggested route at this point of the season even though Matt LaFleur knows his QB will miss the team’s final two preseason games.
Jordan Love Doesn’t Hold Back on Thought Process to Undergo Surgery
Jordan Love’s thumb injury in Week 1 of the preseason turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The 2020 No. 26 overall pick has ample time to rest and recover prior to the team’s regular season opener against the Detroit Lions.
With Nate Hobbs and Xavier McKinney already out, Brian Gutekunst wasn’t about to lose his starting QB. Knowing how the rest of the team looked against the New York Jets, it was an easy decision for the team to lose Love the rest of training camp.

“That was part of the debate is if you get surgery or you don’t get surgery,” Love said. “If this is in the middle of the season, it’s probably something we don’t get surgery on. With it still being early I have time to recover and be fully ready for Week 1.”
Love confirmed, “the recommendation was to get surgery”. After bumping his thumb on a helmet against the Jets, Love was pulled after two drives. He likely wasn’t going to play anymore than that anyways, but the thumb issue certainly didn’t help his case.

“We’ll start kind of integrating back in next week,” Love added. “Just kind of playing it by ear and seeing how it feels once I get throwing, moving around, things like that. Just playing it by ear, but next week we should be starting.”
The State of Green Bay’s Starters Heading Into Week 1
Hobbs, McKinney, and Love are all expected to be back by Week 1. If Love returns to the practice field next week, there’s no reason he won’t walk into Lambeau Field and start against the Lions. It’s a divisional game with massive implications, and it’s LaFleur’s first time opening the season at home.
Jayden Reed has been using a walking boot to get around practice. The status of the Packers leading receiver for the past two seasons remains unknown.
If Reed isn’t back, Matthew Golden may have to assume WR1 duties. With Romeo Doubs also getting shaken up in practice, this Packers receiving core remains a mystery. Four Packers receivers are currently listed as questionable.
Christian Watson’s questionable status is no surprise. The fourth-year receiver will open the season on the PUP list after going down late last season. Dontayvion Wicks sat out of the team’s preseason opener with a calf injury.
Green Bay is looking to get all of these injuries sorted out prior to September 7. Watson is the only player that has a 0% chance of playing in Week 1. Other than that, everyone else has just over three weeks to get themselves in position to play.
