The Green Bay Packers go into the 2025 NFL season once again with the status of running back, MarShawn Lloyd, very much up in the air.
Head coach, Matt LaFleur, said that the former USC standout would “miss some time” after sustaining a hamstring injury against the Indianapolis Colts. It is not clear exactly how long Lloyd will be out of action, but LaFleur made it clear that his status for Week 1 was as of yet unconfirmed.
In his stead, the backup tandem of Emmanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks will look to cement themselves as the primary alternatives to starter, Josh Jacobs, on the final roster.
Although the Packers did add former 49ers third round pick, Tyrion Davis Price, and ex Jets fourth rounder, Israel Abanikanda, the team could be in the hunt for a legitimate alternate back to both pick up some of Jacobs’ slack, and be a feasible substitute in the case of injury.
Packers Could Look To NFC East For RB Depth
One option – and the focus of this trade proposal – has Green Bay make a play for Washington Commanders running back, Brian Robinson Jr..
Robinson did not play in Monday’s preseason game for Washington, which – as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter – could mean an quick end to his spell with the organization.
This tracks with information from Fox’s Jordan Schultz, who reported on Sunday that the the team were shopping the former third rounder.
If the Commanders are not interested in the 26 year old’s services, then the Packers could be willing trade partners with the franchise.
Why A Trade For Robinson Jr. Makes Sense For Green Bay?
After Lloyd’s injury, the Packers could be looking for a legitimate RB2 running mate for Jacobs.
LaFleur has emphasized the importance of the run game over the span of his six years as head coach, and has often been in favor of committee rushing offenses and split workloads.
However, last season the team was perhaps over-reliant on former All-Pro Josh Jacobs, who had just signed a four year, $48 million deal with the team in March 2024. Jacobs had over 300 carries, and at age 27 it is unlikely that multiple seasons of that level of repeated workload would yield good results for either the Packers or the ex Raider.
Thus this upcoming season, the Packers HC could go back to spreading the action more evenly between multiple backs, like he did during his early years in charge of the team with Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon and Jamaal Williams all being part of two and three headed monsters at the position.
Robinson has been remarkably consistent on the ground over his three years in the NFL, continuously managing between 700-800 yards rushing. His receiving threat has improved since his rookie season, obtaining 368 yards through the air in year two, followed by a slightly diminished 153 last season.
Paired with the intellect of LaFleur and the Packers’ always-solid offensive line, the Commander could prove to be an excellent low-floor, high-upside option for Green Bay behind Jacobs.
Green Bay Packers receive: Brian Robinson Jr.
Washington Commanders receive: 2026 fifth round pick, 2027 sixth round pick.
