The path to the NBA is never exactly the same for any two players. That could not be any more true for the Spencer brothers. Cam Spencer, 25 years of age, is in his second season with the Memphis Grizzlies. He had attended three colleges in five years before joining the league.
29-year-old Pat Spencer played just one season of college hoops. He was once the best lacrosse player in the country. Now in the midst of his third year with the Golden State Warriors, he has started to make a sizable impact on the floor.
Neither one of the Spencer’s found their path to the league by normal means. And it took a bit of extra time, neither getting there before 24 years of age,
It’s clear though, that both teams have found the gems they were looking for.
Cam Spencer Playing Historic Ball in Memphis
Cam Spencer began his college basketball playing career at Loyola. This was the same place his brother, Pat Spencer, was balling on the lacrosse pitch.
After three years there, and not exactly excelling, he transferred to Rutgers. While there, Spencer found his game, and was able to deliver big time baskets.
The experience lasted just one season, before the transfer portal came calling. Spencer wound up at UConn, where he played a key part in the national championship. He played extremely well, this being his fifth college season.
Cam Spencer found his way into the NBA Draft, and was a second-round pick by the Grizzlies. In his second season, he’s having one of the best shooting runs the league has ever seen.
Spencer scored 20 points against the Jazz the other night, hitting 6-6 from 3PT. The very next game, he scored 27 points on 9-13 FG (7-10 3PT), while letting the Clippers know that they could not stop him.
He has been one of the league’s best shooters, proving that there is value to be found anywhere. The #53 pick in the 2024 draft has been a star.
Pat Spencer Finding Groove In Year 3
It’s not often that a 26-year-old is the #1 pick in the draft of another sport, but opts to go a totally different route. Pat Spencer was the top pick in the PLL draft, but decided to focus on playing professional basketball.
A little time in the G-League, and then the Warriors gave him his first NBA opportunity. The minutes were not there initially, but he seemed to provide some good energy around the squad.
In his third year with the Dubs now, Spencer has started to find his groove. He has received more minutes this year as the team has dealt with injuries. Just a few weeks ago, he put up a game-high 19 points and seven assists to guide his team past the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It was not widely expected that Spencer would be a big time player. His younger brother, Cam Spencer, has capitalized on his chance in Memphis. The team has dealt with injuries all over the backcourt, so more minutes have opened up.
Both of these guys have looked strong in the league, and are proving that if you stay patient and just go for it, making it is very possible.
Keep your eyes peeled on the Spencer name. Both of them are still just getting started.
