Patrick Beverley Sends Message to Sixers’ Quentin Grimes: “He Needs to Relax”

Quentin Grimes remains a restricted free agent. Currently, there hasn’t been an agreement between the impressive guard and the Philadelphia 76ers front office. Fortunately, the Sixers have plenty of time to find a suitable solution for everyone involved.

Grimes is reportedly looking for a contract in the region of $25 million per year. During a recent episode of “The Pat Bev Podcast,” the former Sixers guard Patrick Beverley shared his thoughts on Grimes’ current asking price.

Yeah, he needs to relax,” Beverley said. “I’m all with the homies getting paid, but let’s be realistic. Go ahead and get a two-year. Put some more work in. Put some more of that joy back in the game like you’ve been doing…I don’t think he’ll get $25 million, right? We’ve seen what he’s done. I think he can go to a younger team and be explosive off the bench. But, I don’t know if 25 is the number. I hope he gets 25, but I don’t think 25 is the number for Quentin Grimes.”

After joining the Sixers midway through last season, Grimes became an integral part of Nick Nurse’s rotation. However, once Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey are all back in the rotation, his role will become far more limited. As such, the front office must weigh up the value Grimes is asking for vs. what he will provide on the court when the roster is fully healthy.

Grimes Reportedly Wants $25 Million Per Season

According to The Athletic’s Tony Jones, Grimes is looking for a contract in the region of $25 million per year.

“The Sixers have been in contact with Grimes and his camp, although the price may end up being steep,” Jones reported. “Grimes, 25, is looking for a contract that averages $25 million per season, league sources tell The Athletic. He has emerged as a dynamic scoring guard, and he gives the Sixers a mix of the ability to shoot from the perimeter and get to the basket and put pressure on the rim off the dribble.”

As Beverley noted, it’s unlikely that Grimes will receive such a significant contract from the Sixers this summer. However, if he is willing to lower his expectations, he could still find a middle ground with Daryl Morey and return to Nick Nurse’s rotation for the coming campaign.

Sixers At a Standstill With Grimes

According to The Athletic’s Kelly Iko and Tony Jones, there has been “little to no movement” in negotiations between the two sides.

“To this point, there has been little to no movement with restricted free agent guard Quentin Grimes and the Philadelphia 76ers, league sources tell myself and
@Tjonesonthenba. The two sides are hoping to continue communication in the coming days,” Iko reported via X.

Grimes will undoubtedly have other suitors if he can’t agree to a new deal with the Sixers. Alternatively, he could opt into his qualifying offer and hit unrestricted free agency next summer. That would provide him with another year to prove himself before negotiating with teams around the NBA. Of course, it’s unlikely Morey lets things get that far.

Nevertheless, it appears that these negotiations will continue for the foreseeable future.
