The Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in unfamiliar territory heading into Week 6 of the 2025 campaign. Since Patrick Mahomes took over as the team’s starting quarterback in 2018, the Chiefs have consistently been the best team in the league. After five games this season, though, they have just a 2-3 record.
Despite their slow start, Kansas City isn’t panicking just yet. On Thursday, the team released a video of Mahomes picking between two NBA legends on its official X account. Along the way, Mahomes made some rather controversial selections, with his pick between Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant and Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal catching many fans’ attention.
Patrick Mahomes Picks Kevin Durant Over Shaquille O’Neal
Mahomes was selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and while he didn’t start as a rookie, he earned the starting gig in 2018. The decision to sit Mahomes on the bench in 2017 paid dividends because he immediately turned himself into the top quarterback in the league. Mahomes rattled off six straight Pro Bowl selections to begin his career, in addition to earning a spot on the All-Pro Second Team twice and winning a pair of MVP Awards.
More importantly, the Chiefs have made it to the AFC Championship Game in all seven of Mahomes’ seasons as the team’s starter. They have made it to the Super Bowl five times, winning it all on three occasions. At just 30 years old, Mahomes has accomplished a lot, and his career is still a long way from being over.
While Mahomes obviously is pretty concerned with what’s going on in the NFL on a day-to-day basis, he also likes to keep tabs on basketball and the NBA. With the 2025-26 NBA campaign right around the corner, Mahomes was asked by K.C.’s social media team to pick between some of the greatest players in the history of the league. When asked to choose between Durant and O’Neal, Mahomes surprisingly sided with the Rockets’ newest superstar.
“I’m taking KD, longevity gives it to him,” Mahomes simply said when asked to pick between the two.

Mahomes and Durant both have ties to the Texas region, which has led to them becoming friendly over the years. Mahomes grew up in Texas and played for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in college, while Durant starred for the Texas Longhorns before declaring for the NBA Draft. There’s no doubt O’Neal is a legend of the game of basketball, but Mahomes is riding with his guy here.
It is worth noting that Durant quickly picked Stephen Curry over Durant immediately after making this selection, but it’s safe to say that, given all O’Neal accomplished during his career, many fans would have chosen him over Durant. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, though, however controversial it may be. In the world of football, Kansas City is looking to get back in the win column, but it has a tough matchup against the Detroit Lions on tap in Week 6.
