Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have been having one of the most difficult seasons of the Mahomes era, and on Sunday, December 14, they’ll take on the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium with everything on the line. The Chiefs have a 6-7 record since falling to the Houston Texans, and their small chance to make the postseason will dwindle down to nothing if they don’t pull off a win over the 9-4 Chargers.
Mahomes joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, when the Chiefs drafted him as the 10th overall pick. Mahomes served as backup to quarterback Alex Smith in the 2017 season and took on the role of franchise quarterback in 2018. Since becoming Kansas City’s starting quarterback, Mahomes had helped the team earn seven consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances and taken the team to the big game five times, winning three of those championships.
But, this just isn’t the year for Mahomes and the Chiefs. What at first seemed like a rough patch early in the season turned into a string of losses from the Chiefs, the latest being that make-or-break game on Sunday, December 7, against the Texans. Now, the team only has a 13% chance of making the postseason, and now, there’s even more bad news for Mahomes.
Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Is Having a Rough Season
In late January, the NFL will announce the finalists to pick up the coveted MVP award for the 2025-26 season. Mahomes, as it stands now, will not be on the tally.
Mahomes’ chances of getting the special award are practically zero percent at this point, due to the Chiefs’ rough season. Not that the losses have been his fault, but a handful of quarterbacks having successful seasons with their teams are shoo-ins to be among the nominees.
So, who will win the award? According to research from Fox Sports, as of Saturday, December 13, Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams is the favorite to earn MVP this season.
“Stafford came back down to earth in Week 13 but caught fire again in Week 14, and his MVP odds moved to -180 from +125,” Fox Sports notes. “In the Rams 45-17 trampling of the Cardinals, Stafford threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns. He leads the league in passing touchdowns (35) and is fourth in passing yards (3,354).”
The ‘Lone Favorite’ in the Race
They add that going into Week 15, Stafford is “the new, lone favorite to take home the league’s highest individual honor.”
Jeffri Chadiha of the NFL’s official website adds, “The sympathy vote is in play here, as well. At 37, the only thing Stafford hasn’t done in his Hall of Fame career is win the MVP award. This might very well be his last great shot.”
Other quarterbacks in the running include Drake Maye of the New England Patriots, Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys.
Now, if somehow the Chiefs keep winning and the chips fall the right way, Mahomes could come back, but that would take a lot. Before the Chargers game, the team has a 13% chance of making the postseason, and if they win, that only increases to 19%. If they lose to the Chargers, it drops to less than one percent. So, yes, this is a make or break moment for the Chiefs for the 2025-26 season.
