At 5-5, and on the outside looking in, the Kansas City Chiefs cannot just expect to make the playoffs because of their recent success; they must put in the work each and every day, and that was the message from quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Week 12.
“You can’t just keep talking about [winning], you’ve got to go out there and do it,” Mahomes stated bluntly toward the beginning of his weekly press conference. Noting that it starts with him, and that he’s spoken with various teammates about the same message over the past few days.
“I think [consistency] just comes with the history that we’ve had, and knowing that we have the guys to do it,” Mahomes voiced. Adding: “It’s about going out there and proving it now.”
“Getting better at practice, getting better in the film room, getting extra time at the facility,” he explained. “But, talking to the guys throughout the building this week, I think guys are excited for the opportunity to go out there and prove that.”
That’s where the disclaimer came in from Mahomes. “You can’t just keep talking about it, you’ve got to go out there and do it.”
In other words, it’s put up or shut up time in Kansas City, and Mahomes couldn’t be more right. Hopefully, the rest of the locker room is paying attention when their two-time MVP quarterback speaks.
Chiefs’ 2025 Playoff Journey Begins in Week 12 vs. the Colts
Mahomes echoed a Monday message from head coach Andy Reid on November 19 when he acknowledged that not executing on the “little things” is beginning to add up in a bad way.
That lack of focus is so unlike the Chiefs, and the superstar QB talked about what Kansas City can do to get back in the right mental headspace before games, likening Week 12 against the Indianapolis Colts — and every outing from this point on — to a playoff game.
“Just like if you were going to a big divisional game or a playoff game, whatever it is, you just know what’s at stake,” Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday. “And so, you try to prepare yourself throughout the week and do the little extra stuff so that your mind can be settled on gameday, and then you can go out there and just play. Knowing that you need to go out there and win the football game, and knowing that we’re playing against a really good football team that’s playing really great football right now.”
“It’s a great opportunity at the end of the day,” the Chiefs’ signal-caller concluded. “Obviously, we’re 5-5, not where we want to be at, but we get to write the rest of this season’s story, and it starts this week with the Colts at Arrowhead. And I’m excited for us to go out there and do it.”
Patrick Mahomes Believes in Leading Chiefs by Example
GettyKansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes embraces his teammates in Week 11.
As for promoting good habits rather than just talking about them, Mahomes believes in being the change and leading by example.
“First, you gotta go out and do it [yourself],” he said after a follow-up question. “I’m always a big — you have to go out there and show that you’re going to put in the work. And I think if you do that [yourself], you can ask guys and push guys to do more.”
Mahomes also added that he has seen many of his Chiefs teammates living by these words this week, pushing one another to be better.
“We’re this close,” Mahomes expressed, using two fingers to display a small gap in space. “You have to just continue to push yourself to kind of break through that barrier and get to where we want to be at as a football team.”
