There aren’t many quarterbacks in the league who can say they’ve won multiple championships, but Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is one of them. Mahomes is considered one of the best quarterbacks of his generation, which is why the Chiefs have on contract to stay with the team through 2031.
It’s a given that Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now, and many would say he’s the best. Most of the other signal-callers haven’t even scored a single championship let alone several. So, it’s always fun to see where Mahomes ranks on tallies of the best players in the league.
Now, the NFL has unveiled their tally of the best players in the league going into the 2025-26 season, and Mahomes made the top 10. That’s the good news, but what’s surprising is who he’s behind on the roster.
Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is No. 5 in the NFL
Ahead of the new season, which is just about here, everyone is releasing their tallies of the best players in the league. Now, Michael Baca of the NFL’s website has released his top 10 players in the league, counting all positions. In the piece, out on September 1, he ranks Eagles running back Saquon Barkley as the No. 1 best player in the entire league. That’s difficult to argue against. Barkley is a force.
So, where does Mahomes fall? He’s No. 5 on the tally, out of 100.
“Mahomes posted career-low numbers in his seventh season as a starter, but the respect he garners from his peers maintains a top-10 ranking within the Top 100 — a streak that began in 2019 after his first year as Chiefs QB1,” Baca says in the story.
“Mahomes’ knack for making the impossible throws also sets him apart,” he added, “and although the numbers might have prevented Mahomes from making his seventh straight Pro Bowl, there’s arguably no other QB you’d want with the game on the line.”
Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson on the Roster
While No. 5 is great, Mahomes unfortunately falls behind Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson on this tally. Allen is No. 3, and Jackson is No. 2.
Of Jackson, Baca notes, “The top-rated quarterback on the Top 100, Jackson continues to the raise the bar as one of the most dynamic players the NFL has ever seen. In 2024, Baltimore’s superstar turned in his best statistical season as a passer with career highs in yards, touchdowns, yards per attempt and passer rating (119.6) while also boasting his lowest interception total as a full-time starter.”
He adds that even though Jackson was cut out of getting “his third most valuable player award, Jackson’s peers see him as the best QB in the NFL.”
As for Allen, Baca states that he’s “has compiled eye-popping numbers in past seasons, but a more calculated version of the Bills’ star quarterback resulted in his highest standing in the Top 100.” He adds that Allen has showed “tremendous growth” the last season “and the story he authored in Buffalo resulted in him being awarded 2024 most valuable player honors despite numbers that would suggest an average season. It was anything but.”
Chiefs Kingdom should certainly raise some eyebrows at Mahomes getting placed behind two quarterbacks who haven’t won a championship. But, all of these quarterbacks are solid players, so at least they’re all getting recognized in the top 10.
