The last time the Kansas City Chiefs lost at least five games in a row came in the 2012 season, 13 years ago. The Chiefs head coach at the time was Romeo Crennel, in his first, last and only full season in the job.
That same year, Travis Kelce caught 45 passes for 722 yards and eight touchdowns at the University of Cincinnati, and Patrick Mahomes was a sophomore at Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas, where he had not yet thrown a pass as the football team’s quarterback.
When the Chiefs finally ended their losing streak at six games, President Barack Obama had recently been re-elected to a second term, swimmer Michael Phelps won four gold medals at the London Olympics that summer, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 was No. 1 at the box office, and the Baltimore Ravens would soon go on to win the Super Bowl 34-31 over the San Francisco 49ers.
Mahomes Watches Game From Team Box
But the current Chiefs losing streak is still going on, stretching to five on Christmas Night when recently elevated practice squad quarterback Chris Oladokun threw for just 66 yards on 22 attempts as Kansas City fell to the AFC West-leading Denver Broncos in a surprisingly close 20-13 affair.
Injured future Hall of Fame quarterback Mahomes watched the game from a team box at Arrowhead Stadium, with the Amazon Prime cameras frequently focusing on his reactions to events on the field below. One of Mahomes’ reactions in particular went viral online, because it appeared that Mahomes responded in an inappropriate way to his own team’s misfortune.
Was Mahomes Smiling at Broncos TD?
With 1:45 remaining to play and the game tied at 13-13, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix connected on what was credited as a one-yard pass to running back RJ Harvey in the end zone for what, it was clear in the moment, would be the winning touchdown.
Oladokun managed to put together an eight-play sequence, but incompletions on third and fourth downs to Kelce and Hollywood Brown caused the Chiefs to give the ball up on downs and end what little chance they had.
But when Nix threw the winning TD pass, the Amazon cameras cut to Mahomes, who appeared to break out in a broad smile.
Needless to say, Mahomes’ reaction was seen as unusual by fans.
“Chiefs fans are beside themselves as Amazon cameras caught Patrick Mahomes smiling after the Broncos scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter,” wrote the Threads account @realmybookie. “Bizarre behavior from the Chiefs legend.”
Fans Irked by Mahomes’ Poorly-Timed Grin
“Mahomes smiling after the Chiefs gave up a touchdown? Is he done in KC?” wondered a fan on X (formerly Twitter).
“That throw saved his legacy,” wrote another social media poster. “Mahomes couldn’t beat Denver in a must-win game with a full roster. Imagine if the practice squad guy pulled it off with that supporting cast.”
“LMAO what a shame that their star quarterback isn’t down on the field cheering them on and motivating them,” wrote yet another. “Instead he’s up in his cozy private suite.”
A post on X by the Savage Sports account displaying the Mahomes video had accumulated 4,700 likes and more than 270 bookmarks by Friday morning.
