Patriots’ Josh McDaniels Details Key Moment He Realized Drake Maye’s Promise

The bond between New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Drake Maye continues to shine and is a large reason for the offense’s success this season.

There have been many jaw-dropping moments from Maye this season, but there was one in particular that occurred early in the duo’s partnership that had McDaniels knowing that this quarterback was for real.

“There was one in training camp where there was a broken play, and he scrambled to his right. He was literally almost out of bounds. He was a couple feet from the sideline,” McDaniels told Peter Schrager.“He threw it, and it had to be like 60 yards,” “(Demario Douglas is) running down the sideline, and I’m like, ‘There’s no way he can get the ball to this guy, right?’”

“Pop scores, and the place goes nuts,” he continued. “I kind of looked around like, ‘Did anybody else see that? That was nuts.”

Josh McDaniels Calls Drake Maye a ‘Special Kid’

When speaking with Peter Schrager, McDaniels continued his high praise of the Patriots quarterback.

“He’s a special kid, and I’ve told his parents a number of times [that] they’ve done an incredible job with their boys, and just being around him on a daily basis,” McDaniels detailed (transcribed by Boston.com). “You talk about a kid who’s got his priorities straight, he’s of the highest character. He’s a great teammate, he’s easy to coach, he’s the guy that’s going to work and grind as hard as anybody else. Wants to win, but wants his teammates and the people around him to win also.”

He added that Maye’s knowledge of the game, along with his desire to ask questions, was indicative of what he’s capable of.

“That was one of the first things that I realized when I started to have the opportunity to work with him in the meeting room, was the questions he asked were just questions that guy that had been in the league four, five, six years would ask,” McDaniels added. “So you knew you were dealing with a guy that could think the game of football. That doesn’t even include the physical attributes, and the things that he can do physically, which are awesome too.”

When speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Maye was very complimentary of McDaniels, taking a moment to show how much he appreciates everything so far this season.

“It’s been awesome,” Maye said. “He coaches at a really high level. He understands the game at a really high level. His offense helps the quarterback, helps me do my job. I try to do my best to keep first downs and scoring drives going so I can help him do his job, but he understands the game. He understands defenses, what they try to do. He understands what we have on offense and our players, our personnel, and he uses us to our best ability.

“It’s been awesome this year, and I can’t thank him enough for what he’s done for me. We’ve still got a long way to go, but he’s a joy to be around every day.”
