New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel’s mustache has grown on pace with the team’s 10-game winning streak.
Vrabel has been doing it as a public show of support of men’s health at a time of year when the players don special cleats for various causes. While Vrabel will expect the Patriots to keep the winning streak going after a 33-15 win over the New York Giants, the mustache won’t even survive the upcoming bye week.
“It will be gone tomorrow,” Vrabel told reporters on Monday night. “I couldn’t have done all this and not go out on Monday Night Football. It will be gone tomorrow. Probably before I talk to you.”
New England hasn’t lost since Week 3 as the Patriots continue a stunning ascent up the AFC ladder after two consecutive 4-13 seasons. The Patriots jumped out early on Monday night with a 17-0 lead and held on from there to improve to a league-best 11-2.
Momentum For the Bye Week
New England has the top spot in the AFC and a train of momentum going into the final stretch of the regular season when the Patriots come out of the bye week for Week 15 in mid December. The Patriots gave the Giants no chance to interrupt that by sealing the win in the fourth quarter.
“I mean, I don’t know if I looked at it like that, but I think we just focused on what the next task was and put a plan together and allow our players to feel confident in it and then figure out what the bye week is and who needs to be here for treatment and who needs to get away,” Vrabel said.
“That’s kind of really what we focus (on) us. I don’t think I was necessarily concerned with any sort of let-down because the bye was here,” Vrabel added. “I think that there would be a lot of players and people that are ready for the bye and earned it. But I don’t think that we were looking ahead to anything.”
Patriots Delivered ‘Complementary’ Football on Monday
Vrabel liked that each unit delivered in the Patriots’ win on Monday night. Defensive back Marcus Jones jump-started with his 94-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter.
“Just things we talk about and doing our best to take care of the football and playing complementary,” Vrabel said. “Today was obviously special teams that gave us a —Marcus [Jones] is just a fantastic returner, and I’m proud of the guys on that unit. They take a lot of pride in blocking for him.”
“We took care of the guys on the edges. Those are tough. Those can be back-breaking for an opponent,” Vrabel added. “So we try to do everything we can to avoid them, and we try to create them.”
“So I think just the complementary phases, staying consistent in the messages and players coming in here each and every week, and practicing and preparing and obviously executing. And then when things don’t go right, try to get them fixed and come back the next drive,” Vrabel concluded.
