Patriots Stole Big Armed QB Away From the Jets: Report

The New York Jets wanted to add quarterback Tommy DeVito, but a division rival beat them to the punch.

NFL Insider Connor Hughes revealed on social media that the Jets were “very interested” in signing DeVito, but he was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots.

Giants Part Ways With QB Which Opened Door for New Opportunity

At the beginning of the offseason, the New York Giants had four quarterbacks on the roster. It felt inevitable that the number would shrink to three, and DeVito was always the most likely guy to shake free from the room.

Ahead of final roster cuts, DeVito was waived, which meant he was subject to being claimed on the waiver wire by one of the 31 other teams. New England jumped at the opportunity with the No. 4 overall waiver wire priority.

“I was stunned when it came through that he was claimed,” NFL Insider Connor Hughes admitted on “Jets Final Drive.”

“The Jets had interest in Tommy DeVito,” Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic confirmed on “Jets Final Drive.”

“All I had heard was I knew the Jets liked him, and I knew the Jets wanted him,” Hughes added.

Concerns Remain When Looking at Jets QB Depth Chart

After missing out on DeVito, the Jets are left with just three quarterbacks between the 53-man roster and the practice squad.

Justin Fields is the starter, Tyrod Taylor is the backup, and undrafted free agent Brady Cook is the developmental piece behind the scenes.

Taylor underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this offseason on his knee.

“Tyrod Taylor is still dealing with [the] knee issue,” Hughes revealed this week on social media.

Head coach Aaron Glenn told the media that he is “confident” that Taylor will be ready to go for the season opener for the Jets. However, ESPN’s Rich Cimini said Taylor hasn’t practiced with the team since July.

“They have the weekend off, so he will have a little bit of time to get healthy. Glenn, to his credit, has been on point for almost all of the injury updates that he has given us, so I’ll take his word for it for now. I’m concerned about Tyrod, to be honest,” Rosenblatt said.

Fields has never finished a fully healthy season in his NFL career. Taylor’s health status will be a major storyline to watch during Pittsburgh Steelers week.

Jets Are Clearly Concerned With the QB Depth

Beat reporters aren’t the only ones concerned; so are the Jets. Why else would they have had that high level of interest in DeVito if they were feeling good?

DeVito, 27, entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2023.

He has appeared in 12 games during his career and has made eight starts. With those opportunities, DeVito has completed 65.3% of his passes, has thrown for 1,358 passing yards, and has an 8 touchdown to 3 interception ratio.
