Things are already going off the rails for the Las Vegas Raiders. Following an awful Week 2 performance against the Los Angeles Chargers, the team had a chance to bounce back against the Washington Commanders in Week 3, as they had to start a backup quarterback.
However, the Raiders put together an even worse performance than what they did in Week 3. All three phases of the game were a disaster, as the defense couldn’t stop anything, the offense couldn’t move the ball and special teams gave up a touchdown.
The special teams and defense played fine in the first two games of the season, but one group has been bad for all three games. The Raiders’ offensive line is a serious problem. Geno Smith was sacked five times and was constantly under pressure throughout.
Ashton Jeanty was frequently met in the backfield when he touched the ball and only averaged 3.7 yards per carry. While the Raiders seem to have multiple problems on offense, it all starts with the offensive line.
The team decided against making any big moves to address the position group in the offense. The group does have some talent, but things clearly aren’t working. Fans are already looking at a scapegoat.
Fans Want Brennan Carroll Fired
This offseason, the Raiders hired Brennan Carroll to be their offensive line coach – a position he had never previously held at the NFL level. Notably, he is the son of head coach Pete Carroll.
There was some hope he’d be a factor as the offensive line coach, but he appears outmatched. Many fans are already ready to see him fired.
“The Brennan Carroll experiment is a big failure,” one person wrote on X.
“Brennan Carroll needs to be fired after the game,” a fan commented.
This puts Pete Carroll in an awkward position. Obviously, he doesn’t want to fire his son, but he may need to consider giving senior offensive assistant Joe Philbin a bigger say over the offensive line. When he took over the group in the middle of last season, they improved. It’s possible that Brennan Carroll doesn’t have what it takes to coach offensive line at the NFL level.
Things Could Get Ugly for Raiders
The Raiders are now 1-2 and have looked like one of the worst teams in the NFL over the last two games. Carroll hasn’t won fewer than seven games as a head coach since 1994, but he has never been the coach of the Raiders.
The Raiders have just two winning seasons since 2002, and it’s starting to seem like nothing will fix this team. It’s still early in Carroll’s tenure, but if he can’t fix them, then who can? The Raiders need to get back on track quickly before this thing spirals out of control.
Las Vegas doesn’t look like they’ll be a playoff team. The offensive line is too bad, and the defense lacks talent. However, they could at least be more competitive and show real signs of progress. Nobody expected the Raiders to be a playoff team this year, but anything less than seven wins would be a huge disappointment for the team.
