The upcoming release of “Happy Gilmore 2” will do something the most powerful people in professional golf haven’t been able to do in the last few years: unify the sport of golf.
The sequel to the timeless Adam Sandler golf classic is set for release on Netflix on July 25, a week after the men’s major season wraps up with The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
The Open once again will be one of the few times all season the best players from both the PGA Tour and LIV come together to share a course for 72 holes. However, that tour-to-tour harmony, which certainly has been hard to come by since the sport splintered in 2022, will be on display in the movie.
The PGA Tour will be represented by the likes of Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris, while the LIV superstar duo of Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka make the long list of star-studded cameos.
Will Zalatoris Says Adam Sandler Brings PGA Tour, LIV Together
As Zalatoris recently noted, Sandler might be one of the few people on the planet who could bring those players together for something other than a chance to win one of the sport’s four majors.
“I think the part of it that’s really good is we Have guys from LIV, guys from the PGA Tour, and it’s the top of the top and it just takes away that level of BS,” Zalatoris said on the “Vanity Index” podcast. “Adam is the one guy honestly who could get us back in a room. Like, kind of, in all honesty, if you were to just say, like, ‘Hey, I want to get you 12 guys in a room to sit in a room, I can guarantee you at least two guys would be like, ‘Nah, I’m good,’ but Adam’s one of the few guys on the planet that can get all of us hanging out together and make a fun movie.”
PGA Tour, LIV Negotiations Remain at a Standstill
When it comes to reunifying the sport of men’s professional golf, the two sides might as well call on Sandler — or literally anyone else. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of imminent deal or action to bring the two sides together, and the supposedly landmark agreement between the Tour and the PIF announced on June 6, 2025, feels like a lifetime ago.
However, there is new leadership on both sides that could inspire some hope or optimism. The Tour recently announced Brian Rolapp is its new CEO, a move that has signaled the beginning of the end of Jay Monahan’s run as commissioner. The Saudi-backed LIV tour, meanwhile, did its own restructuring earlier in 2025 when it brought on Scott O’Neil as CEO to replace Greg Norman.
Whether that leads to any progress remains to be seen. Regardless, Zalatoris insists any sort of bad blood isn’t present among the players — at least when Sandler is around.
“It’s not like there’s any animosity between us all, it’s honestly just this is the world of golf we’ve been in for the last three years, and this is what it took, just stating the facts,” he said on the podcast.
