Phillies Get Promising Update on Alex Bregman Pursuit

The Philadelphia Phillies once again had a strong regular season in 2025.  The Phillies finished the 2025 campaign with a 96-66 record and first place in the National League East standings. With this, they made the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.

Things did not go to plan for the Phillies during the playoffs, however. The Phillies fell to the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, losing the series 3-1. With this, it was simply another underwhelming postseason for a Phillies team that had high expectations.

Now, after a disappointing postseason, the Phillies will be looking to bounce back in 2026. Due to this, they have been pretty active during this offseason. They most notably re-signed star slugger Kyle Schwarber to a five-year contract. They have also brought in a few new players, like Brad Keller and Adolis Garcia.

Yet, the Phillies should still be looking to make more moves. They could use another legitimate star on their roster, and there are certainly some very good players still left on the free-agent market. Among them is star infielder Alex Bregman, and he has been connected to the Phillies this winter.

Now, the Phillies have gotten a promising update on the possibility of them being the lucky team that signs Bregman this winter.

Phillies Named Top Fit For Star Free Agent Alex Bregman

In a recent article for MLB.com, Mark Feinsand discussed the top free agents this year and named potential fits for the top players still available. Naturally, with Bregman being a legitimate star, he naturally made the cut.

“After waiting out the winter for the right deal, Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million pact with the Red Sox that included $60 million in deferrals and opt-outs after 2025 and ’26. Injuries limited Bregman to only 114 games this season, but he performed well when he was available, posting an .822 OPS with 18 homers. Bregman opted out of his contract, giving free agency a try for the second consecutive season,” Feinsand wrote.

When it came to Bregman’s best potential fits, Feinsand named the Phillies as the top fit for Bregman. He also mentioned the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers as possible fits for the star infielder.

With the Phillies needing another impactful right-handed batter in the middle in the lineup, it is understandable that they are being viewed as a top potential fit for Bregman. He would undoubtedly give their offense a nice boost if signed and another high-impact star to work with.

With the Phillies needing to take that next step as true contenders, it would make sense for them to make a major push for a player who has won the World Series twice, like Bregman.

Phillies Have Plenty of Competition in the Bregman Sweepstakes

With Bregman being one of the top stars on the market, there is understandably a ton of interest in him. Because of this, the Phillies have a lot of competition in the Bregman sweepstakes.

In addition to the Red Sox and Tigers, other clubs like the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and Arizona Diamondbacks have all been connected to Bregman this offseason. It will be interesting to see if the Phillies can successfully land Bregman from here.
