Phillies’ Ranger Suárez Predicted to Land $115 Million Contract Extension

The Philadelphia Phillies have a three-headed monster at the top of their rotation. Led by Zack Wheeler and Christopher Sánchez, who are putting together Cy Young-caliber seasons, Ranger Suárez is one of the best third options in baseball.

Suárez is on a very team-friendly one-year deal worth $8.8 million, but entering free agency at age 30, he will want to get paid, and his numbers reflect that aspiration.

The Phillies are running away with the National League East, as the struggling New York Mets continue to struggle, and Philadelphia is surging.

Ranger Suárez Lucrative Contract Extension Prediction

It’s hard to compare Ranger Suárez to his counterparts in the Phillies’ rotation because Christopher Sánchez is on a steal of a contract, and well, Zack Wheeler has been one of the best starters in baseball for the last several years. Sánchez’s deal looks like one of the best in baseball, as he signed a four-year, $22.5 million extension before the 2024 season, and may finish in the top-three of CY Young voting this season.

After being an All-Star for the first time in 2024, Suárez is having another incredible season as a starter. Although he has missed some time with a back issue, Ranger has a 2.97 ERA in 17 starts and 107 innings. He is a very similar pitcher to the Astros’ Framber Valdez in that he can go deep into games, keeps the ball on the ground, and does not give up the long ball. His HR/9 this season is just 0.7.

MLBTradeRumors listed Ranger Suárez at seven on their off-season free agent rankings:

“Suarez doesn’t throw as hard as Valdez, sitting at a career-low 90.2 mph with his sinker this season. The declining velocity and recent troubles with back injuries are limiting factors, but Suarez is a steady No. 3 starter who’ll pitch nearly all of next season at age 30. There’s no reason he shouldn’t handily top Eduardo Rodriguez’s four-year, $80MM contract, and a five-year deal that pushes up closer to the Kevin Gausman/Robbie Ray territory of $110-115MM feels attainable.”

Ranger Suárez Will Be Critical in the Phillies’ Pennant Chase

The Phillies are among the few MLB teams that are clear World Series or bust. With one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, Philadelphia added a dominant closer in Jhoan Duran during the trade deadline, has an MVP candidate in Kyle Schwarber, and two Cy Young candidates in Zack Wheeler and Sánchez.

Now that they have opened up some separation in the NL East, this allows for the Phillies to look towards the playoffs and set themselves up to be as healthy as possible headed into October. There were reports of Wheeler dealing with some shoulder soreness. So Philadelphia may be able to give him some time to rest if their division lead continues to grow.

It is shaping up to be an ultra-competitive MLB playoffs, as the Los Angeles Dodgers look to have prolonged struggles, the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres are surging, and the Phillies remain consistently good as they have been all season.
