The Los Angeles Lakers have always had a knack for landing superstar talent, whether in free agency or through trade, as evidenced by LeBron James and Luka Doncic, respectively.
But now, trade rumors are heating up between the Lakers and Giannis Antetokounmpo. They by no means have the most draft assets to offer the Milwaukee Bucks, but they do have a strong enough package that could be enticing for the 2021 Finals MVP.
Writing for SB Nation, Chris Dudenbostel highlighted a trade between the Lakers and Bucks that would give Antetokounmpo a new home on a contending team and pair him with franchise star in Doncic, all for a decent chunk of the Lakers’ current assets.
Lakers’ Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Idea

Austin Reaves would have to be a part of any deal for Antetokounmpo. James is nearing the end of his career, and according to him, he doesn’t even know what his next move will be, so he’s out of trade talks. The Lakers also have some wing talent, but a deal for the Greek Freak would feature around Reaves and as many assets Los Angeles can offer.
Here’s the trade Dudenbostel laid out:
Lakers Receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Thanasis Antetokounmpo
Bucks receive: Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, Dalton Knecht, two first-round picks
“The Lakers get the Antetokounmpo brothers and the Bucks get their next star in Austin Reaves to pair with Myles Turner,” he wrote on the trade idea. “The Lakers would likely need to attach a pick or two to get the deal done. Ultimately, the Lakers get a chance to pair two MVP-caliber players together, and the Bucks jumpstart their mini-rebuild centered around Austin Reaves.”
With only a few first-round picks to offer, the most the Lakers could offer doesn’t match that of a package the Spurs, Heat, or Raptors could throw out to the Bucks. However, if Antetokounmpo wants to go to Los Angeles, he could very well get that wish granted.
As of now, he has only had confirmed interest in the New York Knicks, but the Lakers have never had a problem landing superstar talent, as seen with their two current superstars. They would be giving a lot up in return, but adding a two-time MVP would vault them right behind the Thunder as a top title contender in the West.
Lakers Injury Updates For NBA Cup
GettyThe Los Angeles Lakers have been without defensive ace Marcus Smart for the past six games as they prepare for an NBA Cup game vs. the Spurs.
Like many teams, the Lakers have struggled with injuries this season, most notably with James missing the first month of the year. While they have been without a few of their supporting players over the past few weeks, the injury report overall looks solid heading into the NBA Cup quarterfinal matchup against the San Antonio Spurs.
Marcus Smart was previously listed as questionable, but he is now cleared to play after suffering from back spasms, missing the team’s last six games.
“Marcus Smart said he’s planning to play Wednesday vs. San Antonio after missing the previous six games,” Mike Trudell wrote in a post on X, then quoting the defensive guard. “‘Back is feeling good. Felt good in practice today … I’m gonna give it a shot tomorrow and see how it feels.‘”
Smart was the only Laker on the injury report, but since he was upgraded to ‘good to go,‘ Maxi Kleber hit the injured list. He is officially listed as questionable heading into the Spurs game with a back injury.
Yet still, overall, Los Angeles has been pretty healthy over the past few games, and will have their star trio of James, Doncic, and Reaves against San Antonio.
