There is a lot of new in the New York Jets’ safety room in 2025.
The new Jets regime didn’t make many splashes in free agency, but one of them was signing Andre Cisco to a one-year $8.5 million contract. Cisco, 25, was born in New York and went to college at Syracuse. This offseason has been a family reunion for the talented defensive back.
The Jets as a team finished with seven interceptions last season, tied for the fourth-worst total in the NFL, per ESPN. Cisco’s superpower is taking away the football.
Across his four seasons in the NFL, Cisco has secured eight interceptions. He carried that same energy over from college, where he finished with 13 interceptions in his three seasons with the Orange.
Cisco is a ballhawk. The Jets are hoping that continues, and perhaps that energy can even be infectious to the rest of the defensive backs on the roster.
“Every guy has to have some type of characteristic that fits what we do and what we’re about, and Cisco does,” head coach Aaron Glenn said during OTAs via Susanna Weir. “Number one, he’s a really, really good person. He’s a really good football player, and he’s a player that can get the ball back for you. You watch him — how he operates with his teammates — and you can tell that he’s a true team guy. I think that’s only going to get better once we continue to coach him and once he understands the dynamics of everything that we got going on. He’s doing a good job for us and I’m happy that we got him.”
A Redemption Storyline to Watch for the Jets
Tony Adams doesn’t have to worry about making the 53-man roster in 2025.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic said he’s a “safe bet” to make the team.
“He had an up-and-down 2024, and there’s a rookie pushing for his starting spot, but the Jets didn’t really add much at safety; Adams should stick as the third safety, at worst,” Rosenblatt added.
Last year, Adams caught the ire of Jets’ owner Woody Johnson, which is never a good thing. It resulted in his benching and created murkiness around his future with the team.
Despite all that noise, Adams was offered a one-year $3.26 million restricted free agent tender this offseason, which he accepted.
He provides invaluable depth at a position with more question marks than answers. Adams also has a path to be the starting safety opposite of Cisco, if he can win the job in training camp.
Evaluating the Rest of the Jets’ Safety Room
The Jets have two rookie safeties in the defensive backfield.
Malachi Moore, 23, was the No. 130 overall pick in the fourth round of April’s draft. The green and white felt so good about him that they traded up to land him. Moore will be pushing Adams for the starting safety gig.
Dean Clark, 24, joined the team as an undrafted free agent this offseason. He was a popular player after the draft that the Jets were able to secure with a sizable $160,000 gurantee. He has a path to not only make the team, but also have a role in year No. 1.
The Jets also have two players entering their second seasons with the team.
Jarius Monroe, 24, appeared in five games for the Jets this past season. He had been on the practice squad, but at the end of the year, he got elevated to the active roster.
Former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers randomly of his own accord, gave Monroe a shout-out during his press conference last year after that announcement.
“I want to finish with a specific shout-out for a guy who does it right all the time, not just some of the time, all the time, and that’s [safety] Jarius Monroe, who just got elevated to the active roster. So, shout-out to Jarius, he’s a phenomenal young player,” Rodgers said via Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Finally, Jaylin Simpson, 25, was the No. 164 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts. He didn’t make the final 53-man roster, but was brought back on the practice squad.
On December 11, the Jets signed him to the active roster off the Colts’ practice squad.
