It’s no secret how bad the Dallas Cowboys wanted University of Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan in the 2025 NFL draft with the No. 12 overall pick.
The Cowboys lost that opportunity when the Carolina Panthers took McMillan at No. 8 overall, but The Ringer’s Todd McShay predicts an opportunity to grab another big bodied wide receiver will come back around in 2026 and predicts the Cowboys will take Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson at No. 12 overall.
“Jordyn Tyson is a big wide receiver, kind of got that Deebo (Samuel) stuff,” McShay said on “The McShay Show” on August 14. “Versatile, really good after the catch and strong.”
Samuel, a veteran wide receiver for the Washington Commanders, earned NFL All-Pro honors in 2019 and will have approximately $81.4 million in career earnings following the 2025 season.
Injuries Have Been Problem for Tyson
There are several red flags with Tyson that the Cowboys probably need to consider. The first is his proclivity for dropping passes.
“Tyson has a legitimate claim to the WR1 spot in April if he can clean up one obvious weakness — drops,” ESPN’s Matt Miller wrote on August 14. “Tyson was credited with eight drops last season on 114 targets — a drop rate of 7.0%. But he has talent. He’s 6-foot-1, 195 pounds and has sprinter speed to get open down the field. He caught 75 passes for 1,101 yards with 10 touchdowns and closed out the regular season with back-to-back-to-back performances of more than 125 yards”
One of the more impressive things about Tyson’s big year was able to put up those kinds of numbers in just 12 games — he missed the Big 12 Championship Game and the College Football Playoffs after he broke his collarbone in the regular season finale against Arizona and McMillan.
It was the second consecutive season Tyson missed time due to an injury. He only played 3 games in 2023 because of a knee injury. Tyson started his college career at Colorado — pre-Deion Sanders era — and had 470 yards and 5 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2022.
From NFL Draft Buzz: “Tyson’s breakout 2024 campaign was nothing short of spectacular, as he hauled in 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns en route to third-team All-America honors. The springy wideout dominated opponents during a six-game stretch where he racked up 732 yards (104.0 per game) and six scores on 50 receptions. His signature performance came in a crucial road win at Kansas State, where he shredded the Wildcats for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 12 catches.”
Older Brother First Round Pick in NBA Draft
If Tyson does go in the first round of the 2026 draft, it will complete a pretty incredible feat for his family with siblings taken in the first rounds of both the NFL draft and NBA draft.
Tyson’s older brother, small/forward shooting guard Jalon Tyson, was drafted in the first round (No. 20 overall) of the 2024 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Research shows us the last siblings to achieve the feat of being drafted into both leagues were former Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans wide receiver Harry Douglas, a third round pick in the 2008 NFL draft, and younger brother Toney Douglas, who was a first round pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2009 NBA draft.
