Promising Red Wings Winger Motivated After Injury Shortened Debut

The Detroit Red Wings gave their young stars a chance at the NHL level in 2024-25. Names such as Simon Edvinsson, Marco Kasper, and Carter Mazur received the call to Detroit. Unfortunately, Mazur’s experience was quite different from that of his peers.

While Kasper and Edvinsson emerged as potential cornerstones for Detroit, Mazur was focusing on 2025-26. He made his NHL debut against the Utah Mammoth. However, he was injured in just his second shift. This injury kept him out for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

Injuries have been a part of Mazur’s career, unfortunately. He is hoping to overcome these issues this upcoming season. He certainly isn’t letting any of these injuries affect his confidence, as he expressed to Red Wings reporter Jonathan Mills in a recent interview.

“I was called up for a reason,” Mazur told Mills. “My game is still there. It’s not a career-ending injury, but the thought of that happening with all my family and friends there is still brutal. However, I have a great support system behind me. Every single one of them supports me no matter what. It was a tough thing to go through, but I have the right people behind me to get me in the right spot.”

As mentioned, Mazur has struggled with injuries in his pro career. In 2024-25 alone, he missed 20 games before his debut injury that kept him out 20 games in the American Hockey League. He plays well when on the ice, but remaining healthy has been an issue.

Mazur has put in work to avoid this issue, though. He mentioned to Mills that he’s put on 15 pounds of muscle this summer. And he believes this added strength could make the difference in keeping him on the ice.

“Gaining strength was always a big part of probably why I’ve gotten hurt a lot,” Mazur said. “I’m on the smaller side, but [Grand Rapids Griffins Strength and Conditioning Coordinator] Marcus [Kinney] and [Griffins Physical Therapist] Zack Harvey put me in a good spot heading into the summer. Just keeping that muscle on, figuring out more about my body and what I really need is huge.”

Making Red Wings is The Ultimate Goal

Mazur has had a taste of what the NHL is like, even if it was brief. Though his debut ended in heartbreaking fashion, it has not deterred him. In fact, the Red Wings forward is even more motivated to push himself toward making the roster out of camp.

“I need to push myself and I want to help them get back to the playoffs. I know I can get to that level, I have the ability, so it’s just about staying healthy. I’ve been through a lot of injuries, and I feel like I’ve come back better and stronger from every single one. I can’t really look at this one any differently,” Mazur said, via Mills.

Detroit is looking to make the playoffs in 2025-26. And they hope young players such as Mazur can contribute to that effort. The Red Wings open their 2025-26 season on October 9th against the Montreal Canadiens.
