One of the intriguing rookie wide receivers the Las Vegas Raiders added last offseason was Ramel Keyton. The former Tennessee standout had a productive college career, but ended up going undrafted.
He played well enough in training camp and the preseason to make the initial 53-man roster, but was eventually let go and then brought back to the practice squad. He played in eight games last season.
The problem for him was that the Raiders overhauled the coaching staff and front office this offseason, so he had an uphill battle staying on the roster. The team let him go back in April, and he’s been sitting around in free agency since.
After months of waiting, Keyton is going to go back to the state where he played college football. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Tennessee Titans have signed Keyton following the injury to Treylon Burks.
Keyton has good size at 6-foot-2 and runs a 4.51 40-yard dash. These aren’t elite attributes, but they are certainly NFL-level. Perhaps going back to an area where he’s more comfortable could be what he needs to take the next step in his NFL career. There will certainly be an opportunity for him to make plays for the Titans.
Chip Kelly Praises Jakobi Meyers
The Raiders’ wide receiver is likely going to look very different this season. Jakobi Meyers is the team’s No. 1, but it remains to be seen who will be behind him.
Though Meyers isn’t a big name, he proved to be one of the best wide receivers in the NFL last season. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly thinks very highly of him.
“Well, he had a big season last year. I think the only receiver in the NFL not to drop the ball. Such a sure-handed receiver. He can play both inside and outside. Showed up a lot today. I thought he made some really, really good plays today,” Kelly told reporters recently.
“I know Geno [Smith] has a really good comfort level with him, but I think his versatility, similar what we just talked about with the offensive line, his ability to play inside and outside really helps us. If we got two tight ends in the game, can he be an outside receiver? If we don’t have two tight ends in the game, can he play and line up in a tight end position in the slot? And he can do it all. He’s a good weapon to have.”
Meyers Talks Raiders’ WR Group
There’s going to be a lot of pressure for Meyers to perform early in the season, but there are some exciting young players behind him. He had a chance to speak about the wide receiver group.
“Honestly, I mean, the respect is going to come, if it comes. I feel like for me personally, the leadership thing is really big. Like I said, because now that I am the oldest guy in the room right now – well, second oldest now that Philly [Phillip Dorsett] is here. But I want to be somebody that helps the guys get better,” Meyers said.
“I want our group to be the best group. It isn’t even about me with this. If we could all collectively eat, that means we could all collectively get one-on-ones, win on third down, win in critical situations, and everybody gets paid when everybody wins. So, I’m looking forward to that.”
