Proposed NFL Trade Has Seahawks Land $52 Million Vet to Replace 34-Game Starter

The Seattle Seahawks are heading into their bye week with an impressive 5-2 record, but the team could have an opportunity to make some trades to bolster their Super Bowl chances. Seattle and other teams have until the NFL trade deadline strikes on November 4, 2025, to make a move.

Seattle does have a 5-2 record, but so do the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams in a highly competitive NFC West. Field Gulls’ John Tapia floated a few potential trade pitches for the Seahawks to consider, mostly focused on strengthening an already imposing defense.

One NFL trade proposal has the Seahawks striking a deal for a New Orleans Saints defender. Seattle lands pass rusher Carl Granderson in exchange for a 2026 third rounder in the trade pitch. Tapia suggests the move could be made to replace pass rusher Boye Mafe, a 34-game starter including four contests in 2025.

Let’s dive into how this trade pitch could work for the Seahawks and Saints.

Seahawks Rumors: Seattle Floated in NFL Trade Pitch With Saints

It is an expensive move for Seattle in two key ways. Seattle giving up a third-round pick is significant draft compensation for Granderson. Secondly, the veteran’s four-year, $52 million contract could prompt the Seahawks to pass on this potential deal.

Granderson’s contract is slated to run through the 2027 season and will have an $18 million cap hit over the next two seasons, per Spotrac. Field Gulls makes the argument on why Seattle could be okay with the price tag given Granderson’s upside.

“Though (Trey) Hendrickson and (Kayvon) Thibodeaux are intriguing options, the trade price of getting both of those players who will be expected to be paid in the near future is too high for this author’s liking,” Tapia wrote in an October 16, story titled, “3 potential trades the Seahawks could make as deadline approaches.”

“Granderson meanwhile is a player who is on the rise, and still has plenty of club control. If the Seahawks make this move, this could potentially signal the end for Boye Mafe in Seattle.”

The Seahawks May Be Wise to Pass on Trading for Saints Defender Carl Granderson

Those arguing against this kind of trade can simply point to the recent defensive success. Seattle’s pass rush has been able to disrupt the quarterback this season.

Through his first seven appearances, Granderson has notched 30 tackles, six quarterback hits, six tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. This is solid production but not the kind that warrants an $18 million annual cap hit.

Seattle Has the No. 6 Ranked Defense in the NFL While Allowing 19.4 Points Per Game

Seattle already boasts the No. 6 rated defense in the NFL allowing 19.4 points per game. Seahawks defender Leonard Williams labels the unit the best of his NFL career.

“This has been the best defense I’ve ever been a part of,” Williams noted, per Seahawks.com. “And it’s not because of stats or anything like on paper, it’s just the type of mindset that we have, and it is just the togetherness, the brotherhood that we have on this defense is really special.”
