It gets overshadowed by Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s legendary performance in the 2025 World Series, but Tyler Glasnow was the second-best pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Blake Snell and Shohei Ohtani struggled against a tough Toronto Blue Jays lineup, but Glasnow was solid for the team.
As a Los Angeles, California native, it meant a lot for Glasnow to contribute to a World Series win in front of his hometown. However, he might be the Dodgers’ best trade chip if they hope to land an even better pitcher.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal may have cemented himself as the best pitcher in baseball after winning his second-straight Cy Young award in 2025. He’s due for a massive payday that the Tigers might not be willing to pay.
That’s where the Dodgers come in. They have no hesitation about dropping major money on pitching. Jim Bowden of The Athletic pitched a trade that would send Glasnow, pitcher Emmet Sheehan and outfielder Zyhir Hope to the Tigers for Skubal.
“The Dodgers’ rotation goes from special to legendary with the addition of Skubal and his back-to-back Cy Young Awards, Bowden wrote. “The Tigers say goodbye to their ace but add another top-of-the-rotation arm who is signed for three seasons, a young starter they can slide right into the rotation and a high ceiling prospect who eventually could form a dynamic outfield with Riley Greene and Max Clark.”
Skubal Could Be First $400 Million Pitcher
Skubal has finally hit his stride, and he’s only 29. There are only 12 pitchers ever to win back-to-back Cy Young awards. The value placed on pitching is at an all-time high, and Skubal is about to make some major money.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan believes that the pitcher could be the first to earn a $400 million contract.
“Now this is where it starts to get really fun,” Passan wrote back in May, before Skubal won his second Cy Young. “The largest contract ever given to a pitcher was Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s 12-year, $325 million deal in the 2024-25 offseason. But if Skubal stays healthy for the next two years and continues his Cy Young-caliber performance, it’s not out of the realm that he’ll seek a 10-year deal (he’ll be 30) for $40 million-plus a season. Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander have gotten $43.3 million average annual values on a multiyear deal. And Gerrit Cole got nine years at $324 million. The foundation for the first $400 million pitcher is there.”
Would This Be Right Move for Dodgers to Make?
After playing such key roles in the World Series, it would be cold-blooded to trade Glasnow and Sheehan, but the Dodgers are only worried about winning. Glasnow is a star, and Sheehan has big-time potential, but Skubal is a Hall of Fame-level talent.
A rotation featuring Yamamoto, Skubal, Ohtani and Blake Snell is about as good as it gets. The Dodgers are in the business of winning championships, and it’s hard to see how anybody can beat that rotation in a seven-game series. If the Tigers are willing to make that trade, the Dodgers will likely be all over it.
