Proposed Trade Sends Super Bowl Champion to Dolphins

The winless Miami Dolphins need a boost and need it now with a 0-3 start to the season, and it might take more than the addition of a player or two.

That’s why Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay suggested the Dolphins go in on a trade for a former Super Bowl-winning head coach, Bruce Arians, who works in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers front office. Kay wrote that the Dolphins need a “cultural reset” since the team “has looked flat in all three phases of the game,” and he sees Arians, 72, as a guy who could turn it around, though he hasn’t coached a game since early 2022.

“While it’s unlikely that any single player could come in and make this team start living up to its immense talent level, a coaching change could instead make all the difference,” Kay wrote. “A proven leader like the Bruce Arians — a renowned motivator during his outstanding tenure as an NFL coach — would be able to get the ‘Phins back on track.”

How a Trading For Bruce Arians Would Work

As Kay sees it, the Dolphins would only need to give up a fourth-round pick to acquire Arians’ rights. Arians has been in the Buccaneers front office as a senior consultant since he coached the team from 2019 to 2021.

“Although it’s unclear what Arians current contract situation is with the Buccaneers, he stepped down ahead of the 2022 season and moved into a consulting role with the organization,” Kay wrote. “If the Dolphins are serious about winning, they should make Arians an offer to return to the sidelines that he wouldn’t be able to refuse.”

“Trading for a new coach in the midst of a season would break new ground, but the Dolphins don’t have much to lose after their abysmal start,” Kay added. “Adding a Super Bowl-winning coach to the mix is their best chance of righting the ship.”

Arians led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl win in the 2020 season with Tom Brady as the quarterback. The former longtime coach also served on the Pittsburgh Steelers staff for the 2008 season Super Bowl-winning team.

Arians has an 80-48-1 career record as a head coach, and he has six playoff wins in his career. He coached in the NFL or college from 1975 to 2022, and Arians earned NFL Coach of the Year honors twice in that span.

Dolphins Could Make Coaching Move Regardless of Bruce Arians

If the Dolphins don’t go for such a trade, a change on the sidelines could still be coming.

“Current Miami head coach Mike McDaniel has been on the hot seat since last year. The team massively underwhelmed in 2024, going 8-9 and missing the playoffs just a season after posting an 11-6 record and leading the NFL in offense,” Kay wrote. “With rumors swirling that he lost the locker room and Tyreek Hill appearing to quit on the team in the finale, it’s time for a change in South Beach.”

“Although it’s far more likely that the ‘Phins would promote an interim head coach to finish out a lost campaign if they part ways with McDaniel following a few more early-season losses, the team could opt to try and pull off a stunning in-season coaching trade to fill the vacancy,” Kay added.
