Brady Cook got his first start of his NFL career on Sunday for the New York Jets.
Following the team’s 48-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15, one thing is clear: Cook should be the starter for the rest of the season.
“Seen enough from Brady Cook to want to see more. Some bad mistakes, but he’s a UDFA making his 1st start. Overall, used his legs effectively, made some good, quick throws, & commanded the huddle. Jets better off seeing if he has backup potential than playing [Tyrod] Taylor or [Justin] Fields,” Scott Mason of Play Like A Jet argued on social media.
Breaking Down Cook’s Performance for the Jets
Cook wasn’t perfect, far from it as a matter of fact.
He finished 22-of-33 for 176 passing yards with one touchdown pass to three interceptions. He also contributed six carries for 39 rushing yards.
Beyond the stats, Cook just looked poised, unfazed by whatever was going on around him.
Beat reporter for Jets X-Factor, Nick Faria, said he “came away impressed with Brady Cook today. Not spectacular, but for a UDFA making his first start? Certainly acceptable.”
“Rooting for Brady Cook. He looks like a capable NFL quarterback in his first career start as an undrafted rookie. Would be awesome if he can develop to be a quality backup for the Jets for a long time,” Optimistic Jets posted.
Jets Put Cook in an Unfavorable Situation
The Jaguars got the ball first, marched 72 yards down the field, and scored a touchdown. Gang Green went four-and-out, immediately giving the ball back to the Jags. Five plays later, the Jaguars scored again.
Down 14-0 before you can blink, Cook was operating from a deficit and playing catch-up for the rest of the game.
“I thought Brady did some good things, but again, he was in a bad situation. We probably had to put the ball up and air it out more than we wanted him to. I would say some of those throws he would say were on him, and also, we have to make sure that we protect him. I’m not just talking about protection as far as dropping back, but protecting him as far as making sure we do the things that we need to so he can operate the offense in a timely manner,” head coach Aaron Glenn explained.
“You can tell when a quarterback is comfortable and when he’s not. There’s no reason for Brady Cook to be comfortable, but he definitely looks it. A welcome sight,” reporter Jamie Stuart said.
Heartwarming Moment During the Jets-Jags Game
With 1:51 remaining in the first quarter, Cook took the shotgun snap and found wide receiver Adonai Mitchell for the nine-yard touchdown.
That was the first touchdown pass of Cook’s NFL career.
The NFL on CBS broadcast had cameras ready to capture the reactions of Cook’s entire family, who were in attendance for the game.
After the game, Cook said, “It was a blast. It was fun. It’s the game I love, and it was an honor to take the field as a Jet.”
