Raiders’ Geno Smith Called Out Over Turnover Issue

Geno Smith had another rough outing as the Las Vegas Raiders fell 40-6 to the Indianapolis Colts on October 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Smith completed 25 of 36 passes for 228 yards but threw two interceptions, extending his ongoing turnover problems.

Following a Week 1 victory, the Silver and Black have dropped four straight games, with Smith’s struggles playing a central role. The former Seattle Seahawks quarterback has now thrown nine interceptions over the first five weeks of the season.

With Smith having turnovers and the Raiders‘ offense not offering a consistent threat to opposing defenses under center, NFL analyst Sam Monson didn’t hold back on his criticism of the veteran.

“I mean, the Geno Smith thing is tough because I think we said previously [that] the turnovers are not necessarily the thing to focus on overall this year,” Monson said on the October 6 edition of “Check The Mic.” “The bigger problem is that outside of the turnovers, where he’s been a little bit unlucky in terms of everything he’s done badly being punished, the baseline is terrible.

It’s the throws outside of the turnovers that are the big problem. But then you get plays like this where it’s like, okay, but that turnover is inexcusable. In addition to not playing well between the turnovers, you can’t have that throw at all. I mean, what are you doing? You are a long-term veteran quarterback ()

“You’re now looking at this quarterback as a guy [who], if you’re throwing that football, I mean, that’s a rookie-level mistake. And now you’re like, Geno’s played pretty terribly so far this year [and] there’s no signs of him pulling out of this tailspin.”

Raiders QB Geno Smith Talks After the Loss

Smith addressed reporters after the loss, explaining the message he’s been emphasizing to the Raiders locker room as the team’s struggles stretch into another week.

“I think we didn’t come out [strong], Smith said after the loss. “We didn’t execute the way we’re supposed to [on offense/defense]. That’s the reality of it. We got to fix it; we got to get better. We got to go to work and figure it out [as a team].”

How Will Raiders QB Geno Smith Look to Improve

Smith also shared his thoughts on how Las Vegas can still turn things around in the 2025 NFL season before it completely slips away — if it hasn’t already.

“Work harder, study harder, study longer, band together, become a tighter group, Smith added. “And I think we’re already a tight group, but we got to get tighter as a group. And guys got to lock in. I mean, it’s a tough game. It’s a one-play-at-a-time game.

“They’re going to face a tough team every week. Man, that’s the NFL. There’s not going to be any easy game. We got to get in our mind that we’re going to go out and win the game and we’re going to get it done. Until we do that, we’ll have the same results.”

Las Vegas will try to get back on track when it hosts the struggling Tennessee Titans in Week 6 at Allegiant Stadium. Dropping a game to a team facing similar challenges could signal that a long season is ahead for Raiders fans.
