The Las Vegas Raiders are finishing up their bye week, and surprisingly, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is still on the roster. He asked for a trade before the season, and now that the team is 2-5, many expected them to pull the trigger on a trade.
Meyers has reiterated his desire to get traded, but it’s sounding like the Raiders are still apprehensive. He’s their best wide receiver, and while he hasn’t put up strong numbers in recent weeks, no Raiders player has been playing great on offense.
Considering Meyers is on an expiring contract, and the season is halfway through, it’s hard to see how the Raiders could get a big return for the wide receiver. However, it sounds like the team would rather lose him for nothing in the offseason than trade for a subpar haul, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“Even though Jakobi Meyers has requested a trade, the Las Vegas Raiders would deal the veteran wide receiver only if they felt they were getting strong value in return, sources told ESPN,” Schefter wrote.
“With the NFL trade deadline approaching, a trade offer of that nature has not materialized, according to sources.”
Schefter Names 3 Teams That Could Be Interested
There are plenty of teams around the NFL that could use wide receiver help. Meyers isn’t a superstar, but he’s a very good No. 2. He’d help a lot of teams.
Schefter named some teams that are interested in wide receivers.
“The three teams that appear to be most aggressively pursuing a wide receiver before the trade deadline are the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos, according to sources,” Schefter wrote.
The Raiders won’t trade him to the division rival Broncos, but there shouldn’t be anything holding them back from trading him to the Bills or Steelers. It’s not entirely clear how much it would take for Las Vegas to part ways with Meyers. Perhaps the Raiders are holding out for a third-round pick, but that might be too steep a price for many teams.
Meyers Explains Raiders’ Offensive Struggles
The Raiders’ offense has been one of the worst in the NFL so far. They are only averaging 14.7 points a game.
The offense was supposed to be the strength of the team, but the defense has been the stronger unit this season. Meyers tried to explain why it’s taking time for the offense to get going.
“It’s a new offense, a new guy at [quarterback], new playcaller, [and] new head coach,” Meyers said last week. “I think anytime you invest in something, it probably won’t go [great] right away. You’re going to take a little hit, and you just hope that it’s a good product, and you keep moving up in the long run.”
“… Every organization is different. I can’t necessarily tell you how long it’ll take us. I hoped it would be sooner rather than later.”
The Raiders are paying offensive coordinator Chip Kelly a lot of money, but he could be on the hot seat if the offense doesn’t improve in the second half of the season.
