It’s safe to say that Year 1 for the Las Vegas Raiders under Pete Carroll has been a disaster. At 2-7, the Silver and Black are heading toward another bottom finish in the AFC West, and currently, there are no positive signs to build on as they head into next season.
NFL teams don’t hesitate to move on after just one year if things aren’t clicking. Could that mean Carroll’s stint with Las Vegas might be over after a single season?
If the season continues to tank with no bright spots, with rookies failing to hit their stride and the play not improving, Carroll might decide his time with the Raiders is over.
On November 6, the Associated Press’ Josh Dubow published a stat on X that will have the Raiders potentially wondering if the Carroll era should continue. The state notes that Carroll matches Dennis Allen for the worst winning percentage (.222) among Raiders coaches since Al Davis joined the franchise in 1963.
Will Pete Carroll Get a Second Season With the Raiders?
The question regarding whether Carroll should continue in Las Vegas is already becoming a topic for the national NFL media. Nonetheless, if the Raiders want to give Carroll another season to turn the ship around, then changes will likely be needed within the coaching staff.
NBC Sports NFL insider Mike Florio believes Carroll will survive, and the coach to get the axe will be offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.
“I feel like it’s not sustainable between the two of them,” Florio said on the November 7 edition of “Pro Football Talk.” “And frankly, between the two, all due respect to Chip Kelly, I’m keeping Pete Carroll. I’m keeping Pete Carroll because Pete Carroll has accomplished things in the NFL. Chip Kelly has accomplished nothing…
“Chip Kelly has done nothing to prove that he’s got NFL chops. I was surprised they hired him. And again, was it a Brady hire? Was it a Brady recommendation? I don’t know. But I feel like when this season ends, one of those two guys is going to be gone between Carroll and Kelly. And my guess is it is gonna be Kelly.”
Raiders’ Chip Kelly Also Faces Criticism
Kelly has been under fire this season for the way he’s used his marquee players on offense, whether it’s changing Ashton Jeanty’s stance or the latest criticism involving Brock Bowers.
With the Raiders’ offense struggling, the spotlight has turned to Kelly, especially after Brock Bowers received few targets in Week 10. That was unexpected after his Week 9 performance, where he recorded 12 catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After the 10-7 loss to the Denver Broncos on November 6, former Raiders wide receiver James Jones criticized Kelly for not targeting Bowers more, noting the tight end finished the game with just one catch for 31 yards.
“Offensively, we got to do better, “ Jones said on “Raiders Postgame Live. “ “I know I come up here every single week and ask, ‘What’s our identity? ‘I don’t know. Chip don’t know neither. That’s the problem. We don’t know if we want to run it, and we don’t know if we want to throw it. What’s our identity?
“… I expected to see more of Brock Bowers. We’ve got a lot of young players out there, and I know Brock’s young, but he’s our superstar. We can’t depend on young players to win primetime games like this. Yes, he got some opportunities, but I’m more concerned about Brock Bowers. How do you go into a game as an offensive coordinator and not find a way to get the ball to him? He’s the best player on the field.”
