Rams Called Out Over Last-Minute Decision Before Facing Colts

Ahead of the start of their game against the Indianapolis Colts, the Los Angeles Rams announced that they would not have rookie second-round pick and tight end Terrance Ferguson active for the week 4 contest.

Ferguson, the number 46 overall pick of the 2025 draft, has landed on the inactive list twice through 4 games now.

This one drew strong reactions from fans and media alike.

The Rams acquired the pick to select Ferguson in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons while moving out of the first round, making him their top pick of the class. Reactions to the decision poured in quickly, with many fans disappointed in the Rams’ decision.

Listed at 6-foot-6, Ferguson was billed as a potentially dynamic receiving threat in the Rams’ high-potency passing attack.

However, his lack of involvement has left many wanting more and questioning the Rams.

“Drafted Ferguson just to have him be a cheerleader,” one fan posted in the comments under the team’s post on X on September 28.

“smh let Terrance play man,” said another.

Some fans joked that the team was keeping Ferguson fresh for the stretch run, while others simply wanted answers to why the Rams have not used him. Others still noted that LA passed on options like cornerback Will Johnson, whom the Arizona Cardinals drafted one slot later.

Ferguson was drafted into a tight end room that already includes starter Tyler Higbee, who was a part of the Rams Super Bowl team in 2021, and top backup Colby Parkinson. Both were active for Sunday’s contest after being listed as questionable.

The group also includes Davis Allen, who has taken what some fans feel are valuable reps away from Ferguson.

Rams head coach Sean McVay has expressed confidence in Ferguson and what he can bring to the offense. However, the rookie went overlooked for meaningful reps even when he was active.

“I think a lot of it depends on how the game unfolds. We have some different packages, different personnel groupings that we can activate. Terrance is a guy that we want to be able to figure out where can we start to be able to allow him to be able to find his role and continue to grow. He did miss some valuable time with that groin. I thought he did a nice job with the things that he could control last week. He’s had a couple good weeks of practice,” McVay told reporters on September 12.

“I think it’s the accumulation of experience, just all the little things. We ask so much of our tight ends, and they’re really part of all three different phases in terms of protection, run game, and the pass game.”

“There’s a lot on them. Those guys are versatile. Sometimes they’re doing receiver stuff, sometimes they’re doing offensive line stuff. You move them all over the formation in different situations. But I think it’s just continuing to develop as a complete player. That’s what we’re really looking for, and that’s consistent with all of our tight ends.”

According to Pro Football Reference, Ferguson has logged 20 snaps on the season. Six of those have come on offense, while he has played 14 reps on special teams.

The Rams are a veteran-laden team with Super Bowl aspirations.

Entrusting a rookie to a high-usage role may have always been A long shot. However, the lack of involvement from the team’s top pick, after years of using draft capital to facilitate deals for veteran players, looms as an underlying storyline of the Rams’ 2025 season.

There are still 13 games to go during the regular season slate. And if the Rams have their way, they will have playoff contests in which they can incorporate Ferguson as well.
