Rams HC Sean McVay Eyeing Potential Change After ‘Thursday Night Football’ Loss

Head coach Sean McVay took responsibility for the Los Angeles Rams’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 5. One day later, the 2021 Super Bowl champion HC suggested roster action could be on the horizon.

McVay was lambasted for his final play call in the 26-23 loss, and he was still disappointed on Friday.

Still, it was the comments regarding a potential roster move that piqued interest.

The Rams are navigating life without starting corner Ahkello Witherspoon from a group that already faced questions when he was healthy. The 49ers took advantage of some mistakes by the Rams’ current CBs, Cobie Durant, Darious Williams, and Emmanuel Forbes.

McVay, who touted the group in the wake of Witherspoon’s injury, reiterated that he likes what the Rams have.

However, he also said they would consider adding a player at CB in line with their approach.

“I think we’re going to look into those things. We always want to try to be able to improve,” McVay told reporters on October 3. “I’m going to really do a deep dive into this tape. But I really like the group of players that we’re working with, and we want to continue to find ways to be able to put them in good positions to have successful outcomes.

“Give the Niners credit. I thought Kyle [Shanahan] and their staff did a really good job of distributing the field. The ball was coming out quick, even though we were getting some quick wins up front. There was some error in some of our underneath coverages, and we’ll look to see where we can improve collectively. But I don’t want to go too deep into that before I have the appropriate information and I’m able to dissect everything appropriately.”

The Rams are still 3-2 on the season, but the loss to the 49ers broke the tie and put them behind their NFC West rival in the standings.

Rams’ Faith in CB Room Tested

McVay announced Witherspoon broke his clavicle after the Rams beat the Tennessee Titans in Week 2, calling the situation “unfortunate.

The Rams placed Witherspoon on injured reserve.

“I feel terrible for Ahkello. Love him. It’s such a bummer,” McVay said in September after the injury.  “Forbes and Decobie continue to take steps in the right direction. I was really pleased with our defense. I thought it was awesome for D Will to be ready.

“You do feel fortunate to have the depth, where a guy like D Will can step up to be able to supplement both Decobie and Forbes.”

The Rams allowed 258 passing yards per game over their first two contests.

Over their next three, which have come without Witherspoon available, the Rams have allowed 342.6 YPG. Poor coverage negates what is still a strong pass rush, and the Rams are tied for the league lead in sacks as a team following “Thursday Night Football” in Week 5.

However, they rank 19th against the pass, with their seventh-ranked run defense giving them a 12th-place mark overall.

Rams Have Intriguing Options in Free Agency, Trade Market

If the McVay and the Rams’ front office can bolster their coverage units, their defense could reach a new level. Free agency has the same names that have been picked over so far, from Asante Samuel Jr. to Stephon Gilmore.

Things could soon get interesting on the trade market, though, as teams fall further back from the rest of the pack.

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is November 4 at 4 pm ET.

Up next for McVay and the Rams are road dates against the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars. It is an opportunity to stack wins against teams heading in opposite directions, largely due to injuries, including to MVP QB Lamar Jackson.
