Rams HC Sean McVay Speaks Out on Matthew Stafford-Davante Adams Connection

One of the biggest talking points across the NFL this offseason is the Los Angeles Rams’ addition of WR Davante Adams. The team released former All-Pro WR Cooper Kupp this offseason, as the 2021 receiver “triple crown” winner struggled with injuries in recent years. Puka Nacua still projects as the top dog at wide receiver, but Adams is an intriguing piece to add to this core. QB Matthew Stafford remains one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and now he has one of the best receivers in the NFL over the last half-decade to throw to.

“Yeah, it’s big, Lindsey,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said on Thursday in response to a question on the developing Stafford/Adams connection from beat reporter Lindsey Thiry. “I think it’s really important. And it’s not exclusive to them but because they don’t have the accumulated experience that maybe Matthew [Stafford] does with Puka [Nacua], and with Tutu [Atwell], and even getting some chances to play with [Jordan Whittington] a bunch last year. So it is important, we feel good about a lot of the stuff they got done in the spring.”

McVay continued discussing the importance of Stafford and Adams building a connection before the season: “Hey, how are we seeing that? Because of the way that they both see the game, that it’s really important to get on the same page — see different coverage looks, what’s the timing and rhythm. So, that is a big focal point for us over the next couple of weeks.”

Matthew Stafford’s Health Still a Major Question Mark For the Rams

Stafford missed almost the entirety of training camp with a back issue. He returned to practice earlier this week, but still isn’t practicing every day. Back injuries can be finicky, and his lack of serious progress over the last month looms ominous as the season approaches.

When healthy, Stafford is one of the best passers in the league. He makes a great pairing with his head coach, executing McVay’s offense with expert precision. If Stafford can play the entire season, the Rams are one of the favorites in the NFC. If he can’t, Los Angeles’s outlook with Jimmy Garappolo under center is far less favorable.

Revamped Depth Chart at Wide Receiver in Los Angeles

With Kupp’s spot on the depth chart filled by Adams, the top four receivers are set. Nacua and Adams are the two starters on the outside, with Atwell playing in the slot in three-receiver sets. Whittington is the fourth receiver, and he’s got a big fan in McVay due to his size and willingness to get dirty in the blocking game.

Behind them, there are several players competing for a roster spot. Konata Mumpfield and Xavier Smith are the favorites, but don’t count out Brennan Presley or Tru Edwards, either.
